A two-year-old was found unresponsive in a small pond in Somerset County on Tuesday, police say.

Shannon Moss with the Maine Department of Public Safety says emergency responders arrived at a home on James Road in Cornville on Tuesday afternoon. Skowhegan’s fire chief was the first to arrive and performed CPR on the boy, who was found unresponsive in a farm pond on the property.

The boy was then taken by Life Flight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor where he remains in critical condition.

Detectives say the incident appears to be a tragic accident.
