Scientists create plastic-eating enzyme

A new ray of hope for fight against plastic pollution emerge as Scientists in Britain and US said to have engineered a plastic-eating enzyme that is able to digest polyethylene terephthalate (PET). PET is widely used in millions of tonnes of plastic bottles and is a major source of pollution as it can persist for hundreds of years. The discovery was made by scientists while examining the structure of a natural enzyme at a waste recycling centre in Japan. Researchers tweak the structure of the enzyme by adding some amino acids leading to accelerate its plastic-eating abilities.
