Chattanooga State and Cleveland State baseball and softball split doubleheaders Saturday at Cleveland State. Cougars baseball won the series 2-1 against the Tigers, bringing their record to 14-10 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
In the first game, Chattanooga State won 9-6. Cougar 3B Rhett Baldwin was 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Tucker Mendenhall (1-for-2, 2 R, 2 BB) and C Kendall Catlett (2-for-3, 1 R) also drove in an RBI a piece. SP Ethan Walls allowed just three earned runs over 4.0 IP.
The second game went down to the wire. After Chattanooga State led 4-1, the Cougars scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. Baldwin, who was 1-for-4 with two RBI in the game, drove in LF Reid Nelson, who singled, to walk off the game in the eighth. Mendenhall was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and P/DH Jonathan Hickman was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run driven in. Hickman also started a great game on the mound, allowing just two earned runs with five strikeouts.
The Cougars will travel to Demorest, Ga. next to face the Lions of Piedmont College. Their doubleheader on Tuesday will begin at 1:00 ET.
In the first game, Cleveland State softball won 6-2. Aubrie Bowman drove in two of the runs with a home run and the Lady Cougars had six hits overall. Kaitlyn Pickens was dominant on the mound and struck out nine batters as she earned the win.
In the second, Chattanooga State won 8-2. The Lady Cougars could only muster three total hits in the contest.
The doubleheader split set the series in favor of the Lady Tigers The Lady Cougars now sit at 11-12 overall and 4-8 in conference play.
Cleveland State softball will play again next weekend as they travel to Columbia, Tn. to face Columbia State. They will play a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 5:00 ET and then a doubleheader on Saturday that will start at 1:00 ET.
