Live updates from Saturday's AHSAA Wrestling North and South Super Regionals

Good morning from Bill Harris Arena at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Today marks the second day of the Alabama High School Athletic Association's Wrestling Super Regionals. The Birmingham and Montgomery sites will funnel qualifiers to the state championship meet in Huntsville on Feb. 12-14 at the Von Braun Cener in Huntsville.

7:35 PM: Thompson both earned AHSAA Class 7A State sectional championships on Saturday in Birmingham and Montgomery, respectively. The Warriors have won four state titles in the largest AHSAA classification, but needed every point and half-point to hold off Oak Mountain in Montgomery.

Thompson bested the Eagles by a 209.5 to 209.0 margin to head into next week's AHSAA State Wrestling Championships on Feb. 12-14 at Huntsville's Von Braun Center with some momentum.

Vestavia Hills took the 7A North Sectional title by a 219.5-191.5 margin over Hewitt-Trussville. The Rebels saw heavyweight Bejamin Cage come through for a 6-4 decision against Hewitt junior Kyle Miskelley in the 285-pound final.  Cage said he knew what his opponent liked to do but still kind of let him do it to some extent.

He felt fortunate to win the match without his best effort of the year. He said it was one of the his toughest matches of the year. He admitted he might not have won the match if not for Miskelley falling the wrong way.

"We can't be satisfied with this sectional trophy," Cage said."We've got to get better and keep working for the state meet next week in Huntsville. .. Next week is definitely going to be tough but I believe in our guys. I think we put ourselves in a really good position to win state by the way we wrestled here at the sectionals."

Madison County claimed the Class 1A-5A North Super Sectional title at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham.

Arab established itself as a serious contender for the Class 6A crown next week in Huntsville with a strong showing winning by almost 100 points at the Birmingham sectional.

6:17 PM: Clay-Chalkville junior Austin Weldon improved to 54-6 this year after winning the Class 6A North Super Sectional championship 160-pound final. Weldon beat Southside-Gadsden senior Ryan Butler after a 3:56 pinfall in their match. Butler is now 42-10.

6:15 PM: The rematch of last year's Class 6A state final at 152 pounds came in the 160-pound weight class at the Class 7A North Super Sectional. Hewitt-Trussville junior Davis Perry won this time after a tight 6-5 decision against Vestavia Hills senior Morgan Paugh. Perry is now 35-2. Paugh's mark on the mat this year fell to 26-3.

6:10 PM: Deshler junior Taylor Shirley won the Class 1A-5A North Super Sectional final at 152 pounds. He defeated Hayden sophomore Zach Cochran by pinfall at the 2:55 mark of their match. Shirley's record improved to 26-12 this week in Birmingham at the North Super Sectional.

Cochran is now 39-13.

6:06 PM: Pinson Valley junior Hank Turner won the Class 6A North Super Sectional at 152 pounds after earning a 4-2 decision over Scottsboro junior Brett Clark. Turner improved to 62-2 for the year while Clark fell to 58-5.

6:02 PM: In the Class 7A North Super Sectional final at 152 pounds, James Clemens senior Pieter Clark improved to 48-6 for the season after he defeated Vestavia Hills freshman Bowman Hill. Clark's 12-5 decision dropped Hill's record to 38-20 this year.

5:59 PM: J.B. Pennington senior Christian Willoughby improved to 26-0 on the season after taking home the first-place medal at 145 pounds in the Class 1A-5A North Super Sectional final. Willoughby earned his fourth victory of the section after a 6-4 decision against Madison County senior Alec Cohen. The defeat moved Cohen's record to 25-5.

5:52 PM: Southside-Gadsden junior Noah Bradford (50-4) just took home the Class 6A North Super Sectional championship at 145 pounds. Bradford won this fourth match of the sectional after a 5-2 decision against Athens senior Mardrell Kirby.

Kirby's record fell to 50-9.

5:51 PM: In the Class 7A North Super Sectional final at 145 pounds, Hewitt-Trussville senior Dalton Meadows improved his season record to 40-5 after his 4-2 decision against Vestavia Hills junior Hayden Hill.

Hill is now 38-5 for the season.

5:48 PM: Dora senior Chase Warren (61-4) just won the Class 1A-5A North Super Sectional championship medal at 138 pounds after his 3-2 decision against Fultondale senior Jamar Fields (59-10) on Saturday evening at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham.

5:45 PM: The Class 6A North Super Sectional championship at 138 pounds went to Fort Payne junior Ian Hilyer after his 5-2 decision versus Southside-Gadsden sophomore Sam Colvin. Colvin's record moves to 39-10 this season.

Hilyer is now 50-8.

5:42 PM: Vestavia Hills senior Jeremy Strong won the Class 7A North Super Sectional championship final bout at 138 pounds. Strong (31-9) pinned Mountain Brook senior Joshua Anders at the 4:29 mark of their match. Anders is now 34-11 on the mat this season.

5:39 PM: In the 132-pound championship final for the Class 1A-5A North Super Sectional, Dora senior Austin Everett improved to 65-1 after he pinned Ashville senior Braxton Bice at the 4:27 mark of their match. Bice is now 38-13.

5:28 PM: The Class 1A-5A North Super Sectional championship at 126 pounds went to Mortimer Jordan junior Braxton Worthington (56-7) after his 6-4 decision against Deshler junior Tyler Williams. Williams now has a 26-9 record for the year.

5:26 PM: The Class 6A North Super Sectional championship at 126 pounds was won by Arab senior B.J. Hayes. Hayes (57-5) won a 7-4 decision against Muscle Shoals sophomore Joseph Green. Green's record fell to 38-11 for the season.

5:20 PM: Mountain Brook junior Drew Reed and Vestavia Hills senior Max Hopkins went into overtime to decide their Class 7A North Super Sectional championship match at 126 pounds.  Reed earned a sudden victory in the first overtime by a 9-4 decision.

5:11 PM: The Class 7A North Super Sectional champion at 120 pounds has just had his hand raised. Hewitt-Trussville sophomore Heath Williamson earned a 5-1 decision against Sparkman senior Patrick Anderson. Anderson is now 44-6. Williamson's record moved to 27-6 for the season.

Bob Jones freshman Parker Snyder (23-9) is facing Buckhorn eighth-grader Stone Barden (41-13) in the other semifinal.

The 7A South bracket is currently not active from Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.

2:32 PM: There 7A South bracket has good depth from top-to-bottom. We'll preview the finals over the next few minutes.

At 195 pounds, Tuscaloosa County junior Josh Smith (48-2) takes on Thompson senior Luke Hester (51-13) for the sectional title.

At 170 pounds, Prattville senior Caden McWhirter (46-0) will try to protect his perfect record against Thompson senior Luke Moore (53-17) at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.

At 152 pounds, Hoover senior Jackson Hall (42-2) takes on Spain Park senior Leon Strong (34-9) for the 7A South sectional crown.

At 145 pounds, Thompson senior Trey Watson will seek out his 64th win of the season. Watson (63-7) will face Oak Mountain junior Hall Morton (36-8) later this afternoon in the finals.

At 138 pounds, Prattville junior Robbie Killough (48-1) faces Smith Station senior Marcus Ruffin (49-5) for the 7A South sectional first-place medal.

At 113 pounds, Tuscaloosa County Carlos Andres (51-0) will wrestle to stay perfect against Thompson junior Cody Mealer (43-5) later today.

At 106 pounds, Oak Mountain freshman Alex Thomas (53-3) will meet Thompson eighth-grader Gabe Hixenbaugh (25-1) in a rivalry that will likely grow very heated over the next four years.

2:20 PM: A few more matches of note catch the eye in the Class 7A South Sectional finals.

Thompson heavyweight T.J. Rayam won the Class 6A state title last year and followed that up with a strong junior season on the football field. He notched double-digit sacks and earned some All-Metro and All-State honors.

Rayam is in the 285-pound final in Montgomery. He enters his match with a season record of 58-3. He'll face Randy Hooks (43-4) of Auburn for the 7A South sectional title.

At 220 pounds, Kevin McClure of Spain Park (53-3) will face Hoover junior Brett Winters (33-2) for the sectional first-place medal.

2:18 PM: Here's one thing that often goes unsaid when covering wrestling meets at the state and sectional levels. When you're good, you better get used to waiting a long time between bouts.

T.J. Edwards of James Clemens is wrestling in the sectional final at 182 finals. Another great event should be Hayden Hill of Vestavia Hills (36-3) will take on Dalton Meadows (36-5) from Hewitt-Trussville.

At 126 pounds, Mountain Brook junior Drew Reed (30-2) takes on Max Hopkins (43-10) of Vestavia Hills.

At 120 pounds, Sparkman's Patrick Anderson (43-4) will face Hewitt-Trussville sophomore Heath Williamson (25-6) later today.

At 106 pounds, Grissom eighth-grader Tyler Ivey (50-10) will go against Hewitt-Trussville's Regan Land (22-4) for the 7A North sectional championship.

2:07 PM: We are in the consolation semifinal rounds in Classes 1A-5A and Class 6A at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham. There are two matches in every weight class left right now. It sort of seems like a dual meet from this point on in regard to these brackets.

1:52 PM: Let's look ahead to one of the highlight matches of today here at the AHSAA North Super Regional. That's at 160 pounds in Class 7A. Davis Perry (33-2) in a rematch of last year's Class 6A state championship match at 152 pounds.

Paugh won by fall at 3:04 in their match last season. He finished up the year at 47-4. Perry ended his season at 46-8.

12:38 PM: Minor junior Kaleb Pope was up 13-2 in his consolation match at 195 pounds, but ended up being pinned by Marlon Whiteside (16-11) of Muscle Shoals. Whiteside finished in sixth place today. 

12:18 PM: Class 1A-5A South Analysis:  It looks like the Leeds football team has fared well in the heavyweight classes. Class 4A All-State running back Tre' Nation is unbeaten so far today and will wrestle in the finals at 220. Class 4A Lineman of the Year finalist and 2014 Birmingham News All-Metro team member Josephus Smith has also reached the 4A finals at 285 pounds.

11:42 AM: Vestavia Hills still leads in Class 7A at the North Super Regionals. Veteran coach Steve Gaydosh summed up his team this year and its performance so far in a brief interview by Mat 5 here at Bill Harris Arena.

"This is not the meet we want to win," Gaydosh said. "This is the one we want to put ourselves into good position to win at the state meet this year. We've had a good year so far with great kids with great attitudes. The kids have responded great."

Gaydosh said that some of his seniors got beat out this year for the team that can't start. They've worked hard to prepare the underclassmen to compete for a championship. He said this year's team is real young. The Rebels won a tournament in Florida against the top-ranked small and medium-sized schools in Florida. They didn't win one final or one championships, but we had a lot of thirds and fourths and fifth-place finishes.

"Everybody on the team this year is pretty good," Gaydosh said. "I don't know if we have too many super guys, but everybody we have is pretty tough."

What does Class 7A look like? Back-to-back-to-back-to-back state champion Hewitt-Trussville beat the Warriors other this year. Vestavia wrestled the Warriors recently, but didn't fare too well.

"We've beaten teams that have beaten Thompson," Gaydosh said. "I think we are in the mix. It will be interesting to see how it all works out next week in Huntsville."
