Tippecanoe County's COVID cases up 24.6%; Indiana cases surge 30%

New coronavirus cases leaped in Indiana in the week ending Sunday, rising 30% as 26,551 cases were reported. The previous week had 20,416 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Indiana ranked 16th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States increased 5.4% from the week before, with 1,086,936 cases reported. With 2.02% of the country's population, Indiana had 2.44% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 39 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Tippecanoe County reported 517 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 415 cases. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 25,154 cases and 237 deaths.

White County reported 94 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 38 cases. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 3,607 cases and 55 deaths.

Clinton County reported 87 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 97 cases. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 4,959 cases and 59 deaths.

Carroll County reported 50 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 56 cases. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 2,207 cases and 24 deaths.

Benton County reported 48 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 36 cases. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 1,217 cases and 15 deaths.

Fountain County reported 97 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 91 cases. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 2,652 cases and 52 deaths.

Within Indiana, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Lawrence County with 1,023 cases per 100,000 per week; Knox County with 1,011; and Huntington County with 994. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were Marion County, with 3,559 cases; Allen County, with 1,648 cases; and Vanderburgh County, with 1,101. Weekly case counts rose in 81 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Marion, Allen and Johnson counties.

Indiana ranked 42nd among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 50% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 61.6%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.

In the week ending Sunday, Indiana reported administering another 90,057 vaccine doses, including 46,866 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 83,679 vaccine doses, including 43,070 first doses. In all, Indiana reported it has administered 6,398,557 total doses.

Across Indiana, cases fell in 11 counties, with the best declines in Clay County, with 158 cases from 193 a week earlier; in Perry County, with 68 cases from 98; and in Tipton County, with 47 cases from 62.

In Indiana, 145 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 100 people were were reported dead.

A total of 843,700 people in Indiana have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 14,373 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 38,796,746 people have tested positive and 637,531 people have died.
