Mel B was hospitalized after a horrific fall down the narrow stairs of her close friend Louise Gannon's London home over the weekend, but RadarOnline.com learned exclusively friends fear the tumble was the result of the Spice Girl's ongoing battle with substance abuse.

On Monday "Scary Spice" revealed she had been rushed to the ER with broken ribs and a "severed right hand."

"Thank you to all the wonderful nurses dr's and my amazing surgeon for the care and expertise given to me here at the hospital I've been staying at, suffering 2 broken ribs a severed right hand needing emergancy sic care," she wrote on Instagram.

But pals are skeptical and are "seriously concerned" over the fall. "She has insisted to everyone around her that she was sober at the time of the accident, but the story just doesn't make sense," the informant told RadarOnline.com exclusively. "Someone falling down the stairs would have most likely broken the fall, but it appears that Mel didn't."

In fact, the singer was scheduled to be in Los Angeles this week to take another court ordered drug test, but will likely not make it back for the test in light of the scary accident.

The insider revealed to RadarOnline.com Mel did test negative during her court ordered drug test right before she left for London, however, friends fear the timing of being in London, and having this very bizarre fall, "is extremely concerning with Mel's own admitted substance abuse problems."

Sources say friends are concerned "it's only a matter of time until Mel overdoses and has a very tragic outcome."

"Mel has a lot of demons that she refuses to properly deal with, and needs intensive treatment," dished the insider.
