Motorsport

Murray Grierson snubbed the final ceremony at the end of the Kerridge National Rally in mid-Wales, round four of the Mintex National Rally Championship, following an ''unexplained freak time'' by Roger Duckworth on the final stage.

Grierson, piloting his Subaru Impreza, had led for most of the day after Arrochar's Jimmy Paterson, winner of last week's Scottish National event in Dumfries, had retired at the end of the third stage. The Dalbeattie man entered the final 14 miles at Myherin leading Roger Duckworth by more than 20 seconds, but the Mintex Champion-ship leader powered through the stage a massive 55 seconds faster than Grierson, and 39sec faster than anyone else.

''That time was impossible,'' Grierson said, packing his car on his trailer even before Duckworth had mounted the winner's ramp. It was a view backed by a number of competitors, including third-placed Steve Petch. ''There's no way Roger could have taken three seconds a mile out of everyone over 14 miles,'' the Ford Escort WRC driver said. ''It's impossible. Murray's been robbed of a win he deserves.''

Despite Grierson's protests, baffled officials could find no explanation of the huge time difference and Duckworth was allowed to keep his victory and extend his cham- pionship lead over the Scot. Result:

1, Roger Duckworth/Mark Broomfield (Whittlebury) Subaru Impreza, 1hr 22min 44sec; 2, Murray Grierson/Campbell Roy (Dalbeattie) Subaru Impreza, 1-23.09; 3, Steve Petch/Peter Croft (Bishop Auckland) Ford Escort WRC, 1-23.47; 4, Steve Hill/Julia Rabbett (Oxford) Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 3, 1-25.05; 5, Glyn Jones/Huw Lewis (Carmarthen) Subaru Impreza, 1-25.53.

Championship standings. 1, Duckworth 72pt; 2, Grierson 59; 3, Geoff Smith (Heathrow) Ford Escort Cosworth 57.

Julian Stevenson had given Ireland the lead in the first half when the Scottish defence failed to cut out a cross.
