Kolkata: Two persons, including a senior citizen, were killed and six were seriously injured in four accidents in the city between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
A 73-year-old man from Hazra Road was run over by a minibus when the vehicle skidded on the rain-soaked road around 8.30pm on Friday. The victim, Velzee Patel, was trying to cross the road to get home when the accident happened.
“The minibus was plying on the Deys’ Medical-Howrah route and moving towards the east. The incident took place between Hazra law college and Garcha Road crossing. Profusely bleeding, Patel was taken to CNMC Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The Gariahat police have arrested the bus driver and seized the vehicle,” said an officer.
Another death was reported from the accident-prone Central Garden Reach Road around 4.45am on Saturday. Sohail Alam, 39, was on a scooterette when he was run over by an unidentified vehicle, possibly a truck, near a dock Port gate under the South Port police station. Alam, a resident of Ripon Street, sustained multiple injuries and was declared brought dead at SSKM Hospital.
In another accident, reported from the Kingsway-Strand Road crossing around 10.30pm on Friday, a south-bound truck hit an app cab, injuring the two cab passengers — Sohail Ahmed and Md Kalamuddin, both 25 years old. The duo was taken to SSKM Hospital with face and chest injuries, from where they were later discharged. Local police seized both vehicles but the truck driver fled.
Near Uttar Panchannagram, an east-bound car collided with a north-bound car around 11.30pm on Friday. Four occupants of the north-bound car were injured and had to be treated at Ruby General Hospital. Both cars, along with the drivers, were taken to the local police station.
