MOAB — Classes are canceled for Grand County High School next week after 10 staff members and nine students tested positive for COVID-19.

All classes and after-school activities, including athletics, are canceled Sept. 7-10, according to a Grand County School District Facebook post.

"We are unable to provide substitutes for this many staff members," district officials said on Facebook.

Three teachers and four students also tested positive for COVID-19 at Helen M. Knight Elementary. If classes are canceled there or at Margaret L. Hopkin Middle School, the district said it will send out a notification.

A mandatory mask mandate will begin for all preschool through 12th grade students and all staff, volunteers and parents starting Sept. 8, the post said.

Under a law passed by the Utah Legislature during the pandemic, local health districts are able to implement mask mandates but must seek approval from the county's elected body after 30 days.

Grand County School District implemented a mask mandate for all K-6 classes at the beginning of the school year.
