Just like any other workers, truckers want money — but also dignity and respect. I was 25 when I came to Scotland. I came first in 2005, and then in 2006 I stayed.
I’d completed three years of study in physics and astronomy in Poland and planned on becoming a physics teacher after taking some time out. Back then, pay was low in Poland and I could earn a teacher’s salary for a month back home in just four days driving a lorry in the UK. A rule change at the university made it more difficult for me to graduate and I ended up staying.
When I first came, I slept on a friend’s couch, then I got my own room, then a studio flat.
