Former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Paul Worrilow requests release from Baltimore Ravens shortly after signing contract (UPDATE)

Former Eagles linebacker Paul Worrilow had a short stay in Baltimore.

Worrilow signed with the Ravens on Friday after passing a physical. However, the veteran linebacker asked for his release on Saturday, a person with knowledge of the situation told NJ Advance Media. The team granted Worrilow’s release roughly 24 hours after his contract was signed.

Worrilow, who is expecting his third daughter in September, wanted to be with his wife and children as they prepare to welcome another child to their family, the source said. Worrilow plans to reevaluate his career once the child is born.

UPDATE: Raven coach John Harbaugh addressed Worrilow’s situation with Baltimore reporters on Saturday:

“I spoke to him last night and he was great,” Harbaugh said. “He was all ready and excited to go, so I was surprised [with his decision]. I assume he’s trying to figure things out and work things out, what he wants to do, he and his family. Every person has the right to do that, so we’ll see what he decides and we’ll respect it, whatever he decides.”

Worrilow was released by the Eagles last week. He drew interest from multiple teams following his dismissal, but decided to sign with the Ravens because they were the closest team to his family’s home in Wilmington, Delaware, the person with knowledge of the situation said.

The veteran linebacker and lifelong Eagles fan missed all of last season after suffering a torn ACL on the first day of organized team activities.

Despite the injury, the Eagles re-signed Worrilow to a one-year deal in March.

This summer, Worrilow was able to take part in the first few OTA sessions but suffered a setback in his surgically repaired right knee and was held out of workouts until mandatory minicamp in June.

He took part in the first two practices of training camp in July but suffered another setback. He missed two weeks of practice and the Eagles’ first two preseason games. He returned to practice last week but was released after another setback.

Worrilow told NJ Advance Media that he really wanted to be an Eagle, as he grew up watching Brian Westbrook, Jeremiah Trotter and Brian Dawkins as a youngster.

“I remember calling [my agents] when I was a free agent again,” Worrilow said to NJ Advance Media in June. “I said ‘It’s Philly, I don’t care what the contract is like. This is where I want to be.’”

Worrilow joined the Eagles last offseason after a one-year stint with the Detroit Lions. Prior to joining the Lions, Worrilow spent four seasons with the Atlanta Falcons.

The University of Delaware alum signed with the Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2013.
