Dubai, Oct 29: A pro-democracy activist says his wife was beaten and detained for hours in Bahrain after he jumped on a car carrying the island’s king during his recent visit to London.

Sayed Alwadaei jumped on a car carrying Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa this week outside 10 Downing St ahead of his meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May.

Alwadaei said today his wife and his infant son, who hold US citizenship, are now banned from leaving Bahrain after trying to fly out hours later.

The Bahraini government did not respond to a request for comment. Bahrain’s government has dismantled its main Shiite opposition group, jailed activists and exiled others amid an ongoing crackdown on dissent, the likes of which has been unseen since its 2011 Arab Spring-inspired protests.
