Can you un-invite wedding guests once you've sent out invitations? Bride-to-be's controversial dilemma divides the internet

A bride-to-be has divided Aussies after saying she wants to issue her wedding invitations, but also have the power to un-invite people should coronavirus restrictions change down the track.

The anonymous Australian woman shared her dilemma on the Modern Wedding Facebook page, where she was quick to incite dozens of others.

'I'm planning to send out invites soon for my wedding later this year,' the bride-to-be wrote. 

'I know restrictions could change and I just want to be prepared! Is it weird to send a note saying that un-inviting people is a possibility? How could I word that?'

It wasn't long before she was met with a barrage of mixed responses.  

Some had practical solutions, suggesting the woman merely send Save the Date cards, where she highlighted how things could change:   

'Have on there due to Covid-19 we would love you to save the date, however until it's closer we are unsure weather we will be able to have you in person or live stream the event,' one person wrote.

Others said she should plan as though the restrictions are in place, and 'increase the number of guests as the date gets closer'.

'People will understand not having months of lead time,' one woman wrote.

Another added: 'It's so tacky [to un-invite people]. Just invite the people you 100 per cent need at the wedding.

'Then, a month or so before, invite the rest if Covid-19 restrictions change.'  

Others said they thought, given the current health crisis, that it is fine to un-invite people if necessary - and people need to understand.

'I added a Covid note saying due to the unpredictability of Covid this invitation may need to change to ensure we can still have the best day of our lives,' one recent bride said.

Another wrote: 'We sent out a little poem type thing with our Save the Dates. It was asking them to keep the date open however we may have to change it due to Covid. You could do something like that'. 

However, some were merely furious that she was even contemplating such a move.

'I wouldn't bother hurting the people you love,' one person wrote.

'Please don't do that,' another person wrote. 

The rules for weddings around Australia vary at present. 

In New South Wales, weddings and funerals limited to one person per four square metres up to a maximum of 100 people. 

Meanwhile, in Victoria, no more than one person per two square metres can attend an indoor or outdoor wedding - but only with electronic record keeping. The four-square-metre rule applies if there is paper-based record keeping. 

Restrictions and caps on weddings have been constantly changing across Australia on account of the pandemic.
