10 Things to Consider for One Sustainable December

10 Things to Consider for One Sustainable December

I recently looked for advise from one Sustainability practitioner. She told me to "Start where you are". So, following her advise, I´m determined to navigate the pressing uncertainty of business, work-life, and intimate personal challenges, through the lens of Sustainability and Digital Transformation - to help myself and hopefully others.

These are a few points that caught my attention and made me think. I might do this every month.

👪 One SDG at risk: The impact of Covid-19 on poverty

No alt text provided for this image

The COVID-19 crisis risks reversing decades of progress in the fight against povertyNew research published by the UN World Institute for Development of Economics Research warns that the economic fallout from the global pandemic could increase global poverty by as much as half a billion people, or 8% of the total human population. This would be the first time that poverty has increased globally in thirty years, since 1990.

👉 To support the poorest and most vulnerable, the UN has issued a Framework for the immediate socio-economic response to COVID-19, calling for an extraordinary scale-up of international support and political commitment to ensure that people everywhere have access to essential services and social protection. 👂 One podcast: Sustainability through economic and political lens, by Anna Chashchyna and Sustainability Explored

In this absorbing episode, sustainability consultant, writer, and podcast-host Anna Chashchyna talks for more than an hour with Noel Bagwell from The Honest Lawyer Podcast.

Bagwell´s arguments seem solid at times, and are controversial and deep. I enjoyed his replies in plain english, to questions as important and rich as “Should we regulate pandemics?”, “Should we ban conquest?” and “What political regime is best for sustainability?” Also, I learnt a lot about how a lawyer´s brain approaches to these debates. And so will you.

🥺 One sad reality: Hazardous Air Quality at Delhi Half Marathon

Marathons and many athletic competitions, are followed internationally because they represent the best in human nature; from the capacity to overcome one's limitations, to the benefits of team-work to achieve higher goals. In particular, Marathon elite athletes like Andamlak Belihu and Ruth Chepngetich are an example for millions of recreational runners that wish to enjoy a healthy live in healthy urban ecosystems.

On Nov the 29th, some of the world’s leading marathon runners participated in a half-marathon in New Delhi as India’s capital suffers from Covid-19 cases and air pollution that has recently been among the world’s worst. More than 60 professional runners participated in the race on Sunday, while several hundred enthusiasts ran in other cities on routes of their choice, using a mobile app to post their race timings, said the event organisers.

This is a complex situation. And with every sustainability challenge, a Systemic Approach is required, that takes into account all dimensions: Environmental, Social, Economic, Governance. What is the role of sponsors? What would be the economic and social impact in places like Kenya and Ethiopia if these events where cancelled? What can citizens do to demand better urban ecosystem srevices? How can new technologies and research help policy makers?

Since 2018, World Athletics (formerly IAAF, International Association of Athletics Federations), with the help of Kunak, has been deploying Air Quality (AQ) montoring stations in stadiums and urban races, and analizyng data, partnering with CSIC, UNEP and many local AQ managers to tackle this issue with innovative solutions.

According to the Value-Neutrality Thesis (VNT), technology is morally and politically neutral - like a knife - neither good nor bad. Only its uses have moral or other value, not the technology itself.

We do not need to get too philosophical, but we need to understand how Intel, GE, Google, Zoom can meet their promise to build a better society and advanced economy. #retail #finance # tech #health # energy #auto #travel #manufacturing #food #telecommunications

😃 One damn good thing: Microsoft to become Carbon Negative by 2030?

No alt text provided for this image

In January 2020 Microsoft made a historic announcement to go carbon negative by 2030, remove historical carbon emissions by 2050, and invest $1 billion in a climate innovation fund. They plan to achieve this by shifting to 100% renewable energy, electrifying global campus operations vehicles, attaining LEED Platinum Certification, and more.

What interests me the most is to see which carbon sequestration technologies they will invest in??? It´s been almost a year since the annuouncement and we should be ready to see the first indicators in the right direction.

👉 Help me track their performance Microsoft will become carbon negative by 2030
