MARYLAND — Hospitalized patients with the coronavirus are at the lowest level in eight weeks, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan reported Sunday morning. Currently, there are 1,003 patients hospitalized with the virus, including 404 on the intensive care unit as of Sunday, according to Maryland health officials.

In the past 24 hours, the state has conducted more than 9,200 tests for the coronavirus, Hogan said Sunday morning. A total of 427,155 coronavirus tests have been conducted overall.

A total of 57,973 people have tested positive, an increase of 491 confirmed cases of the virus since Saturday, the Maryland Department of Health reported.

As of Sunday, state health data shows the following about COVID-19 deaths in Maryland:

  • 87 percent of the state's coronavirus deaths have been people age 60 and older.
  • 52.1 percent of those who died from COVID-19 are residents of congregate living facilities.
  • 46.2 percent of those who have died from the virus have been 80 years or older.
  • 45.4 percent of the deaths are in Montgomery and Prince George's counties.
  • 24.5 percent of the deaths are in Baltimore County and Baltimore City.

More Maryland businesses were allowed to open at 5 p.m. Friday as Maryland entered stage two of its recovery plan. Local jurisdictions in Maryland, though, have the authority to be more restrictive than the state in reopening. See where each stands in the reopening process.

"Moving into stage two does not mean that this crisis is behind us or that we can afford to stop being vigilant and cautious," Hogan said at a news conference announcing the reopening. "Continue practicing physical distancing — staying 6 feet apart and avoiding crowds and close gatherings."
