Bahrain misses medal

Manama : Bahrain’s hopes of winning their maiden medal yesterday at the Fourth Islamic Solidarity Games, being held in Baku, Azerbaijan vanished after Maryam Hassani came fourth in the women’s Skeet event.

The only Bahraini shooter who made it into the final after coming second in the qualifying round with 68 points earlier yesterday was hoping to finish in the top three, but could only finish fourth.

Turkish shooter Banu Noor captured the competition’s gold medal, followed by Nurlana Jafarova of hosts Azerbaijan for the silver and Izle Aydin, also of Turkey for bronze.

Shooting events continue today with the men’s skeet competition where the trio of Hassan Mohammed, Nasser Khalaf and Tammar Al Watt look to make up for the women’s unfortunate finish and to grab one of the three medals for Bahrain.

Meanwhile, Bahrain has high hopes today when the athletics events kick off at Baku Olympic Stadium, located near the Olympic Village, from 9.25am (Bahrain time).

Bahrain’s progress was closely followed by Supreme Council for Youth and Sports deputy general secretary and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) general secretary Abdulrahman Askar, who arrived in Baku yesterday to head the kingdom’s delegation.
