More than 100 mummies and artifacts are making their way to the Steel City.

Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Science Center will be welcoming “Mummies of the World: The Exhibition” on Oct. 5. The exhibition will provide visitors a rare glimpse into ancient life and afterlife through 125 mummies and related artifacts. It’s the largest collection of real mummies in the world and will be open at the center’s PPG Science Pavilion from Oct. 5 through April 19, 2020.

Tickets go on sale Sept. 3 on carnegiesciencecenter.org. Tickets cost $19.95 for adults, $17.95 for seniors (those 65 and older) and $15.95 for children ages 3-12. There are also combo tickets that includes both the mummy exhibition and admission to the Carnegie Science Center. Those are $32.45 for adults, $27.45 for seniors and $24.45 for children. There are group discounts available. Members of the Carnegie Science Center can visit the mummy exhibit for only $11.50.

The mummies come from South America and Europe as well as ancient Egypt.

Among the mummies in the exhibit are a Hungarian family that is believed to have died from tuberculosis. Known as the Vac Mummies, they were discovered in 1994. There’s Egyptian animal mummies and shrunken heads from South America.

The story of the mummies is told not just through artifacts. The exhibition uses multimedia stations to delve further into the personal lives of the mummies and the ordeal they went through to be preserved and ultimately end up on display.

“Through modern science and interactive and engaging exhibits, Mummies of the World: The Exhibition will completely transform visitors’ perception of mummies and mummification,” said Carnegie Science Center’s interim director, Jason Brown, in a press release. “We are so excited to bring this unforgettable experience to the Pittsburgh region.”

The museum recommends you plan between 60 and 90 minutes to go through the exhibition.
