A wave of new contracts has prompted a hiring spree at Raytheon Intelligence & Space, which is looking to fill nearly 1,000 engineering, supply chain and tech jobs in Southern California.

The company plans to hire 683 employees for its El Segundo operation and about 200 in Goleta, with additional hires in Irvine and San Diego.

The RI&S team in El Segundo develops space-based sensors and advanced tactical and surveillance radars for military use.

Douglas Greene, Raytheon’s senior director of talent acquisition, said the company needs to fill a variety of roles.

“It’s really is all over the place,” he said. “There are lots of opportunities. Principal electrical engineers is a big one, and we also need people for factory planning, production control and software engineers.”

Greene said he hopes to complete the hiring process by the end of the year.

Raytheon’s Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite is used in the new U.S. Joint Polar Satellite System, which orbits the globe every 14 hours.

VIIRS data, which is used by agriculture, finance, transportation, insurance and energy industries, helps improve forecasting the weather, flooding and storms, which in turn helps protect lives and property. It also produces more accurate measurements of sea surface temperature, according to Raytheon.

Raytheon has a long history in Southern California.

“We’re very excited about the local talent pool,” Greene said. “It’s very competitive. We are growing as an organization, and this market has the kind of people we’re looking for. El Segundo is, without a doubt, one of our largest facilities.”

Raytheon’s El Segundo operation employs about 6,000 workers and includes 16 buildings totaling nearly 3 million square feet, while the 353,000-square-foot Goleta facility has a staff of about 1,400.

Headquartered in Arlington, Va., RI&S is one of four business segments of the U.S. defense/aerospace conglomerate Raytheon Technologies. RI&S employs 34,500 people in 500 locations scattered throughout 30 countries. The company reported $15.2 billion in U.S. sales in 2021.
