California Girl, 12, Dies After Being Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver While Walking Home From School in Castro Valley

Authorities in California are looking for a suspect after a 12-year-old died girl in a hit-and-run collision.

The incident occurred at around 4 p.m. on Monday in the vicinity of Crow Canyon and Manter Road in Castro Valley, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said.

The girl had been walking home from school with her sister when she was struck by a pickup truck, NBC Bay Area reported. She was within sight of her home at the time.

The CHP said a man driving a black Ford F-150 pickup truck struck the girl, then fled the scene.

"The 12-year-old girl has succumbed to her injuries," CHP Castro Valley wrote in an update on Facebook. "Our hearts and prayers are with the family as they mourn the loss of their daughter."

John Martinez responded to the post, saying his daughter had given the girl CPR at the scene.

"My daughter gave the girl CPR until help arrived," he wrote, adding that she is "having a hard time as well as my grandson who knew her from school."

He said: "My prayers [are] with the whole family in this hard time."

Others also shared their condolences on Facebook, with Minerva Chenoweth writing: "So sorry to hear about the 12 year old pedestrian ... deep condolences to her family for their loss of a beloved daughter. May she RIP and may the driver be found/apprehended!"

Mark Hodson added: "Truly sad the world in which we live nowadays. My prayers for this young girl's family at this difficult time."

He added: "When will people slowdown and pay attention when operating a motor vehicle."

Joe Cerletti added: "They'll find him. If they haven't already. Prayers for the girl and her family and all who witnessed this."

Meanwhile, a neighbor told NBC Bay Area that the intersection where the collision occurred has been an issue before.

"They're always late for something, you're just driving too fast you're just not paying attention and you don't know there are kids walking around," Anne Ponugoty said.

The suspect is described as a white or Hispanic male and is thought to be aged between 25 and 35. He was last seen on Crow Canon heading towards Interstate 580, according to the CHP.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any information is urged to call the CHP at 510-581-9028 or 911 to report it.
