Three quilts made by lifelong quilter and business owner Helen Ericson (1929-2016) highlight items available at the Lincoln Quilters Guild (LQG) auction, Friday, Aug. 3, 7 p.m. at Lincoln Christian School, 5801 S. 84th St. The quilts were donated for the auction by Ericson’s son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Phyllis Ericson of Lincoln.
Prior to the auction at 6 p.m., the feature lecture “1970s Quilts of Helen Ericson” will be presented by Jonathan Gregory, assistant curator of exhibitions, International Quilt Study Center and Museum.
The lecture and auction are part of LQG’s 45th Anniversary Quilt Show, Friday, Aug. 3, from 9 a.m.-7 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 4, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The public is welcome.
During her lifetime, Helen Ericson of Emporia, Kansas, created and hand-quilted more than 200 full-sized quilts, taught quilting, sold thousands of quilt patterns and wrote a weekly newspaper column on quilting. She displayed her quilts at exhibitions across the U.S. In 1986, Ericson was named a Kansas Master Folk Artist.

Ericson’s quilts donated for the auction include the Feathered Star Quilt (pictured) made in 1984 -- an 85- by 85-inch hand-quilted piece that won First Place at the Mid America Fair in Topeka, Kansas, and two wall hangings, “Star Sampler” and “Stars in my Treasure Chest.” Twenty-five of Ericson’s award-winning quilts have been donated to the International Quilt Study Center & Museum.
When asked which quilt was her favorite, she would always answer, “That is like asking me which son was my favorite child. Each quilt has its charms, its problems, its uses and its joys.”
The show will also feature quilts and garments created by award-winning quilter Kris Vierra; a Gem Quilt display by members and teacher MJ Kinman of Louisville, Kentucky; hundreds of member-made entries (traditional, modern and art quilts); challenge quilts; past presidents’ quilts made by LQG members since 1973; LQG community service projects; pop-up shops, lectures, demonstrations and a café.
