'Today' host Savannah Guthrie shares perfect mom text after eye surgery

Savannah Guthrie is in high spirits after undergoing eye surgery. 

The "Today" show co-host shared an update on Instagram Friday after undergoing a procedure Wednesday to repair a "massive tear" in her retina and retina detachment after her 3-year-old son, Charley, accidentally threw a toy train at her eye in November.

"Things are looking up! I mean I’m not (looking up), but things are," Guthrie wrote on Instagram. And the journalist has her mother to thank for keeping her positive.

Guthrie shared a screenshot of a text conversation with her mother, who asked, "Have your spirits lifted?" When Guthrie responded, "Sorta," her mom offered some motherly advice: "Three years ago today, you were waiting with bated breath for this new little baby to bring joy to your heart. And every day he has except maybe for the day he threw the train into your eye. Love u. Don’t fret." 

"Mom perspectives are the best perspectives," she captioned the conversation. 

Guthrie also shared a sweet picture of Charley consoling her while she rested at home face-down on a cushion post-surgery.

Co-host Hoda Kotb explained on air Thursday that this is "kind of how Savannah has to stay" while recovering. 

"When you have that kind of surgery, you kind of have to be immobile," Kotb told viewers. "So that's how she's going to be for the next little bit. But she's got her kids under there."

Co-anchor Craig Melvin chimed in: "Two little nurses taking good care of her."  

After announcing Nov. 27 that she suffered an injury, the TV host had five laser treatments before Wednesday's retinal detachment surgery. Ophthalmologist Dr. Annie Negrin told the show that the surgery can require patients to be face down at all times for up to three weeks. 

Guthrie, who shares kids Vale, 5, and Charley with husband Michael Feldman, shared a sweet "out of office" message on her Instagram on Wednesday night: A sign drawn by her son that reads "Nobody can come in to my mommy's room." The TV host told her followers she was home resting "for a while." USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Guthrie and "Today" for more information about how long she'll be away from the show. 

"Very grateful to my doctors, prayers of good friends and my husband @feldmike who has swooped in like a superhero," she wrote.

Joined at the desk Wednesday by Melvin, Kotb announced to viewers that Guthrie was absent for surgery. 

"I'm sure some folks are waking up and going 'Where is Savannah this morning?' "Kotb said. "She's going to keep us posted. So we wish for her very speedy recovery." 

"The vision is getting better every day, but I'm still blurry," Guthrie said last week. "Right now it's like having one contact (lens) in and (one) out. When it first started though, it was like a complete blur. I couldn't have seen anything."

Guthrie was still able to make it to co-host the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade alongside Kotb. She was under doctor's orders to take it easy, but previously said she hoped to be back in action for the parade. Sure enough, she was in her usual spot next to Kotb on the parade route Thursday morning, sporting a pair of glasses.
