Nonessential businesses ordered closed in Jefferson County

The Jefferson County Department of Health has ordered all nonessential businesses and services in Jefferson County to be closed beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, JCDH Health Officer Dr. Mark Wilson ordered. No gatherings of more than 10 people will be permitted.

“Each day, and each action, results in lives lost, or lives saved," Wilson said. “We expect to last for quite a while. We are in for a long rough ride, several weeks."

Effective immediately, any restaurant, bar, brewery, or similar establishment shall not permit on-premises consumption of food or drink until April 6, 2020. They may continue to provide curbside food service. Prior to April 6, 2020, a determination shall be made about whether to extend this provision. Hospital food service is not included in this.

Grocery stores are not affected by the order.

All elective medical and dental procedures should be delayed until April 6. No nonessential visitors will be allowed at senior centers and assisted living facilities except for certain compassionate care situations such as end-of-life.

Preschools and childcare centers with 12 or more children are ordered closed. However, facilities providing care for children of first responders, essential healthcare workers, essential public health workers or other essential workers may remain open as long as they follow a social distancing plan provided by the health department.

The nonessential businesses ordered closed include:

  • Entertainment, including night clubs, bowling alleys, arcades, racetracks, indoor children’s play places, pool halls, adult gaming and entertainment venues
  • Recreation facilities, including gyms and fitness centers, swimming pools and spas, excluding licensed physical therapy services
  • Nail salons and spas
  • Casinos
  • Concert venues and auditoriums
  • Theaters
  • Tourist attractions (including museums, planetariums, parades)
  • Body art facilities and tattoo services
  • Tanning salons
  • Massage parlors
  • Waxing salons/threading salons
  • Museums and Galleries
  • Performing Arts centers/events/rehearsals
  • Social clubs
  • Fraternity and Sorority meetings and events
  • Proms, Formals and other similar events
