Denning History Afternoon and Talk on ‘Wicked Ulster County’

GRAHAMSVILLE - Denning History Afternoon (a virtual and in-person program) will be held Sunday, September 19 at 1 p.m. at the Museum on St. Rt. 55 (332 Main Street) Grahamsville.

The Museum’s rich collections from Claryville and the Town of Denning that bring life to the history of the Upper Neversink and Upper Rondout valleys will be open and available to visitors from 1 to 2 p.m. Sharing items relating to the Claryville or Denning area is welcome.

Special program at 2 p.m.: Author and Town of Gardiner Historian A.J. Schenkman will speak on his book, Wicked Ulster County. Situated in the scenic Hudson Valley, Ulster County is a lovely location to make a home and raise a family, but it wasn’t always so pleasant. Unsavory characters and immoral events have sullied its name. In the 1870s, the Shawangunk Mountains inspired fear rather than awe, as groups like the Lyman Freer and Shawangunk gangs robbed and terrorized locals, descending from the protection of the wooded peaks. Kingston was torched, arson blazed in Kerhonkson and even the Mohonk Mountain House was threatened by flames. In 1909, the Ashokan Slasher’s bloody crimes and sensational trial captured headlines across the country. Discover these and other salacious stories buried in Ulster County’s history.

Books will be available for signing and sale. The Museum’s exhibitions and the 1930s Lost Catskill Farm will be open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Members are free, and non-members: $5. In person attendance is limited to 30 and registration is required. To register please email info@timeandthevalleysmuseum.org with your name and number of attendees, and put In Person Registration in the subject line, or call (845) 985-7700.
