Alabama schools close due to COVID: 3 More schools go virtual

COVID-related school closures in Alabama continue.

West Blocton High School in Bibb County, Lawrence County High School in Moulton and Etowah Middle School in Attalla are closing buildings and moving to virtual learning due to COVID-19.

In the case of West Blocton, all traditional high school students will transition to remote learning due to the “inability to meet staffing needs.” The students will return Nov. 6.

The change does not affect elementary or middle school students.

Lawrence County High will also be on virtual learning through Nov. 6. Wifi bus stations have been placed at various locations throughout the community, school officials said.

Earlier, Lawrence County School System announced East Lawrence Middle School and Moulton Middle School would switch back to virtual learning until Nov. 2 after multiple teachers tested positive for the virus.

Etowah Middle School, part of the Attalla City School System, is also going virtual starting Oct. 28. The decision, school officials said is “based on staff illness, tracing and limited availability of substitutes.”

Student case numbers remain low, they added.

Students will return to campus Nov. 9.

Pickens County Schools announced Monday afternoon they were closing Gordo Elementary and Gordo High School. Grades K-8 will go to virtual until Nov. 9; high school will start with a staggered schedule on Nov. 9.

The shutdowns are just the latest due to increasing coronavirus cases.

Last week, Southeastern School in Remlap closed due to the number of COVID cases among students. Mulkey Elementary in Geneva City School system closed as well due to a “shortage of school personnel.”

Updated Oct. 26 at 1:45 p.m. to reflect closure of Etowah Middle School.
