Party Land closing its doors this summer as owner seeks to retire; merchandise on sale
After being open for 21 years, Party Land in Sioux Falls is closing its doors.
Gary Krekelberg, owner of Party Land, said closing the store on West 26th Street has been on his mind for a few years now.
He said he didn’t want to sell the store knowing the party industry isn’t what it used to be. While there were many other reasons behind his decision, he said he wanted to retire.
“Mostly, it’s time to slow down,” Krekelberg said.
He plans to use his new free time to fish, volunteer and visit other family members he hasn’t been able to see that much.
“It was a tough decision, but we all have to move on at some point," he said.

A going-out-of-business sale will go from June to the end of July, when Krekelberg plans to close the doors. Most items will be between 10-20% off, but some items will be up to 50% off.
The store carries a wide variety of party supplies including balloons, napkins, table covers, banners, streamers, noisemakers, beads and party favors.
Party Land also sells small toys and other decorations needed for events and occasions like birthday parties, weddings, religious events and sports celebrations.
Krekelberg told his staff, most of whom are part-time employees, about the decision three months ago.
“I have a very loyal staff, and I know they’re kind of sad about it, but they’re also very supportive,” he said.
One of the hardest things about the closing, Krekelberg said, is saying goodbye to the customers.
“I’ve had some of the best customers any business has ever had, and I know I will miss them," he said.
Party Land will be closed May 29-31, but the sale will start June 1 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the store will resume regular hours after. Party Land is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays.
