ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – The Rocky River Citizen Police Academy is getting ready for a better year in 2021.
New Rocky River Police Chief George Lichman said he hopes the 2021 class of the Citizen Police Academy (CAP) will be the first to gather in the community room of the new police station as the construction is moving along swiftly and scheduled to be open late summer.
Though the 2020 class finished their class work virtually, Lichman said virtual will not be an option—thankfully-in 2021. “We want to do this safely, (but) virtual is not an acceptable alteration,” he told members of the CPA Alumni Association during their December meeting.
The new police station will have more than 47,000 square feet and will be about four times the size of the old police station that was built in the 1950s. In addition to the community room, there will be an indoor garage for police vehicles, expanded jail space and other improvements.
Lichman said he wants to do as much as he can with the CPA. He noted the group “raised funds for the bike patrol, donated to the K-9 unit, provided graduation ceremonies for classes and sends anniversary greetings to officers.
Though field trips and educational and social events had to be cancelled this year, he said “many of these activities will eventually return next year.”
