While the politicos fight it out, we offer you a live ticker in both English and German. Public broadcasters ARD and ZDF provide their usual game, a man-against-man debate.

This year, however, the pre-electoral verbal scrimmage has been elevated to a higher level. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is enabling the public viewing of the showdown between the top candidates of Europe’s party families, pitted against each other for the position of European Commission head. ARD and ZDF, on the other hand, will be showing this particular debate on the PHOENIX specialty channel.

Italian journalist Monica Maggioni will be moderating the live debate, with nominees Martin Schulz of the Social Democrats, Jean-Claude Juncker of the Conservatives, Ska Keller of the Greens, Alexis Tsipras from the Left, and Guy Verhofstadt of the Liberals.

With one week to go before the European Parliament elections, we expect things to get hot and heavy. Viewers are encouraged to tune in throughout the debate and share their thoughts (or misigivings) on social networks under the hashtag #telleurope. Feel free to bring your topic into the mix. The debate will be screened live at taz.café, and the taz Europe team will offer you live commentary and exclusive insights. If watching at home, make sure to follow our live ticker online, which you can find at www.taz.de.
