GA Coronavirus: Gwinnett Ties For Second Most COVID-19 Deaths

Gwinnett County moved into a tie with Cobb County for the first time Friday for second most deaths caused by COVID-19.

ATLANTA, GA — Gwinnett, Georgia’s second most populous county, is poised to become the state’s second deadliest county for COVID-19.

In daily statistics released Friday by Georgia’s health department, Gwinnett County tied for the first time with long-time second-place Cobb County, both with 492 deaths from COVID-19 since the pandemic began. Cobb is Georgia’s third most populous county.

Fulton County, Georgia’s most populous county and where Atlanta is located, is still in the lead, with 661 deaths so far attributed to COVID-19.

GEORGIA CORONAVIRUS NUMBERS FOR NOV. 27, 2020

The Georgia Department of Public Health in Atlanta reported a total of 416,303 confirmed cases of COVID-19 at 2:50 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27. According to the health department’s website, that includes 2,412 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 over the last 24 hours. In addition, Georgia reported 706 new antigen-positive cases over the last 24 hours, which are considered to be probable cases of COVID-19.

Georgia has reported 8,746 deaths so far from COVID-19, with 30 more confirmed deaths recorded in the last 24 hours. Georgia also reported 634 probable deaths from COVID-19 since the pandemic began. These probable deaths include fatalities with indirect evidence of COVID-19.

Georgia reported 34,605 hospitalizations — 18 more than the day before — and 6,464 admissions so far to intensive-care units. The percentage of ICU beds in use statewide dropped to 73.2 percent of capacity, but not all of these beds are being used by COVID-19 patients. About 30 percent of total ventilators available in Georgia are currently in use.

No information is available from Georgia about how many patients have recovered.

Counties in or near metro Atlanta and other metropolitan areas continue to have the highest number of COVID-19 positives, with Fulton County still in the lead and the top four counties posting triple-digit increases.

Counties in or near metro Atlanta also continue to have the most deaths from COVID-19. Also, Gwinnett County is now tied for the first time with Cobb County for second most deaths from COVID-19 in Georgia.

Globally, more than 61.4 million people have tested positive for COVID-19, and nearly 1.44 million people have died from it, Johns Hopkins University reported Friday.

In the United States, nearly 13 million people have been infected and more than 264,000 people have died from COVID-19 as of Friday. The U.S. has only about 4 percent of the world's population but more confirmed cases and deaths than any other country.
