A man was hit and killed near the Marquette University campus in Milwaukee.
Emergency crews were called to North 10th Street and West Wisconsin Avenue around 8:10 p.m. Tuesday for a crash involving a vehicle and pedestrian.
The crash was right next to the Marquette University campus.
The university identified the victim Wednesday morning as the Dean of Business Administration, Dr. Joe Daniels.
"On behalf of the entire Marquette community, please join me in praying for the Daniels family and friends and our colleagues in the College of Business Administration," Marquette President Dr. Michael Lovell said in an email to the campus community. "Joe was a campus fixture for more than 30 years, and I was honored to call him my friend. He inspired students his entire career as a mentor and educator and made an indelible impact on the field of economics as a master scholar. Ultimately, Joe helped take Marquette Business to new heights. He was instrumental in inspiring a new vision for the college, which we will carry forward in his memory."
All classes at the College of Business Administration have been canceled Wednesday.
"People who didn’t even know him are very sad that this happened. He was very well loved," student Almere Acosta said.
A campus prayer service in Daniels' memory was held Wednesday afternoon in the Chapel of the Holy Family.
"Everyone just seemed like really quiet about it and sad. It’s just really sad," student Natalie Weyers said.
The university said support resources were available through Campus Ministry at the Faber Center Counseling Center.
"Please pray for Joe’s family and friends as they grieve an immeasurable loss," Lovell said.
Daniels, 60, of Muskego, was named the Acting Dean of Business Administration for the 2019-2020 school year in January.
He had been with Marquette since the early 1990s in various teaching and leadership roles.
Investigators said Daniels was crossing the street when he was hit by a 20-year-old woman who had a green light.
She was traveling at a high rate of speed, police said, and stayed on the scene.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana.
Police said they found marijuana in the suspect's car and it had a strong odor of marijuana.
Investigators said it appeared Daniels was dragged for 100-150 feet after the impact.
Her name has not been released.
Police continue to investigate the collision.
