My third year research project: muscle regeneration
On Biomedical Science we had lots of opportunities to learn laboratory and research skills.
However, my favourite part of Biomedical Science was my third-year extended laboratory project. This involved one semester of conducting my own background research, my own experiments and writing it all up in my own time.
I really enjoyed my project because of all the freedom and responsibility I was given. The project that I was assigned to involved looking at muscle regeneration in mice and how it was impacted when we removed a specific receptor called Patch. It gave me a real sense of being a researcher and I enjoyed being able to investigate a real current science problem and propose my own explanations.

The Undergraduate Awards are an international programme of awards celebrating undergraduate research. They accept submissions from students from any university around the world.
I submitted the write up for my third-year laboratory project to this award scheme and although I didn’t win in my category, I was granted with “Highly Commended” recognition for my work. This means that my work has been recognised as some of the “best in [my] field”. I am very proud and grateful that all this hard work has been praised at such a high level.
I am now completing my 4th level in Biomedical science where I will achieve my integrated Masters. The integrated Masters course has been like a large laboratory project and I have been enjoying it a lot. It has allowed me to get more in depth and expand on my knowledge from my third-year project.
Achieving the Undergraduate Award, along with my great experiences in my laboratory projects has inspired me to pursue a career in research. It has given me more confidence in my own ability and great evidence of my research skills, which is proving helpful as I am applying for PhD opportunities across the country.
