TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – With spring here and summer around the corner, more and more people will be boating around the Tampa Bay area.

That’s why the Florida FIsh and WIldlife Conversation Commission wants to make sure everyone stays safe.

They were out checking in with boaters on Thursday, making sure they have the proper equipment.

Florida is the boating capital of the world and FWC says with nearly one million registered vessels, people need to be safe.

“A quarter of all the reportable boating accidents are actually caused by inattention and not having a proper lookout. Every once in a while, FWC likes to remind people that we have a lot of people out on the water. We’re the boating capitol of the world. We have nearly 1 million registered vessels, so you have to take your time and look around,” said Ashley Tyer with FWC.
