Maria Cornelius, daughter of Chad and Erin Cornelius, of Arvada, Colo., attended 2022 Colorado Girls State in Greeley, June 4-9, sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary Unit 134 of Peetz. Maria has been junior member of the Peetz Unit for many years.

Maria was a junior at Holy Family High School in Broomfield, Colo., this past year where she was a piano accompanist for the Holy Family orchestra and for the spring musical. She was a member of the Holy Family soccer team, and a member of National Honor Society. Maria is also a regular volunteer with the St. Joan of Arc Parish, helping with middle school youth activities, and in the last year she worked part-time at an Arvada nursing home as a food server during the pandemic. She also works part-time as a youth soccer referee.

Due to her father’s job change, Maria will finish her senior year at Pius X Catholic High School in Lincoln, Neb. She wants to study pre-law and music or music education during her college years.

The Peetz American Legion Auxiliary is also creating a little summer fun, as it begins “Flocking and Flagging” yards in the Peetz community to raise funds to purchase bronze markers for veteran’s graves in the Peetz Cemetery. The Legion and Auxiliary places these permanent commemorative markers on veteran’s graves in the local cemetery as a way of honoring all who served in the United States military.

Beginning on Flag Day, June 14, and running through Independence Day, July 4, three teams of auxiliary members will be placing pink flamingos and American flags in local yards. Within 24-48 hours, for a suggested donation of $10, the resident can choose to have the ladies move the “flock and flags” to another family member’s, friend’s, or neighbor’s yard. Paying $20 will buy insurance against multiple “flaggings and flockings.” For an extra $5 fee, residents can find out who “flagged and flocked” them; otherwise, the culprits remain anonymous.

Instructions for the “Flocked and Flagged” fundraiser will be posted in the yard. For further information, call Evelyn Gardiner 970-334-2219.
