ANN ARBOR, MI - An Ann Arbor man accused of stealing more than $20,000 worth of golf equipment from the University of Michigan was sentenced to one year of probation on Tuesday, April 24.
Kyle G. Mast, 36, must also complete 50 hours of community service and pay $1,750 in restitution, Judge Carol Kuhnke ordered Tuesday in Washtenaw County Trial Court.
"I've been treated fairly for this huge mistake and it will never happen again," Mast said. "I apologize to my family and friends and look forward to moving on."
Mast was accused of forcing his way into a university golf facility numerous times between Aug. 29, 2017 and Oct. 8, 2017, according to Melissa Overton, associate director at the University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security.
He was initially charged with two counts of breaking and entering with intent, attempted breaking and entering with intent and receiving and possessing stolen goods greater than $20,000.
In exchange for his guilty plea on March 13 to one count of breaking and entering a building with intent, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison, three other felonies were dismissed at sentencing.
Judge Kuhnke agreed not to sentence Mast to jail.
A search warrant executed at Mast's Ann Arbor residence turned up multiple stolen items, including golf equipment and other accessories, Overton said.
Mast admitted to breaking into the university's Weisfeld Family Golf Center at 2119 S. Main St. and taking items that were not his.
The school's website says the center "provides the University of Michigan men's and women's golf teams an elite, state-of-the-art practice facility."
