Roundup: Blue Devil Invite set for Saturday; Hornets win R1 Mega-Match at Grove City CC

Sep. 21—The 20th annual Sharpsville Blue Devil Cross Country Invitational is set for Saturday in Buhl Farm Park.

Race Director Barry McLaughlin said 50 schools are registered thus far. Registration concludes on Wednesday.

The race did not take place a year ago, owing to COVID-19 restrictions.

"Two years ago we we had 83 schools, including thousands of runners and schools from Ohio as well as other regions participate," McLaughlin related. "We are unsure what to expect since COVID, but we are hopeful we will have close to those numbers participating this year.

"The first Blue Devil Invitational was held just days after the World Trade Center attacks in 2001," McLaughlin recalled.

McLaughlin said, "The course was changed out of necessity because of the 'naturalized zones' within the park. The course will present many new and challenging features that I believe the runners will like.

"We had to cancel last year, but we are hopeful that our number of schools participating will increase above 50 as the deadline to register approaches," McLaughlin concluded.

Notes: The order of events will be: 8:45 am — Elementary girls; 9 am — Elementary boys; 9:15 — Varsity girls; 9:45 — Varsity boys; 10:15 — Junior High girls; 10:45 — Junior High boys; 11:15 — JV girls; 11:45 — JV boys; 12:15 pm — Open race. ... Wolf Creek Timing Services will provide results and handle registration. ... McLaughlin said Sharpsville and Hermitage fire departments, Elite and McGonigle ambulance services, as well as trainers, will on site. Hermitage, Sharon and Sharpsville police departments will assist with traffic flow as McLaughlin anticipates "thousands" of spectators. ... The Boy Scouts of America will present the flag, and Sharpsville High marching band will perform the national anthem. ... "I have named the elementary race 'Bissell's Little Blue Mile' in honor of Kathy Jo Bissell our current elementary coach," McLaughlin said. "She does a tremendous job with the program, and she also serves as my assistant coach, along with Tabitha Smith and Nate Martin. ... A live band, "Justified," will perform in the amphitheater during the race," McLaughlin said, noting numerous vendors, including Galaxy Donuts/Hot dogs, Kona Ice, and Haitian Sensation, will be available.
