Ohio is observing Veterans Day with ceremonies and lights, as well as special promotions for those who served in the military.

In southwest Ohio on Tuesday, Gov. Ted Strickland will dedicate the new Clinton County Veterans Memorial, a round wall in Wilmington depicting actual letters sent to and from service members.

Wreath-laying events are scheduled in communities around the state, including Toledo. Mayor Carty Finkbeiner also is asking Toledo residents to turn on their porch lights this evening as a salute to veterans.

Akron Area Events:

Akron - 9:30 a.m., continental breakfast for veterans organizations and the public in the Martin University Center at the University of Akron, 105 Fir Hill. Breakfast is free, but reservations are requested. Guest speaker is Brig. Gen. Matthew L. Kambic. Outdoor ceremony at 10:30 a.m. at the flagpole that marks the eastern gateway to Buchtel Commons, including laying of a wreath, a 21-gun salute. Speaker is broadcast journalist Eric Mansfield. Barberton - 11 a.m., service at Barberton Military Honor Roll in Lake Anna Park, sponsored by VFW Post 1066.

Brunswick - 11 a.m., ceremony at Brunswick City Hall, 4095 Center Road (state Route 303). The public is invited.

Canton - 11 a.m., ceremony at Westbrook Veterans Memorial Park, 1235 Harrison Avenue NW. Veteran of the Year award will be presented to U.S. Marine Corps veteran Chuck Seifer.

Copley Township - 8:45 a.m., program at Copley-Fairlawn Middle School, 1531 S. Cleveland-Massillon Road, to honor veterans. A continental breakfast will follow. For information, call 330-664-4875.

Cuyahoga Falls - 11 a.m., ceremony at the Veterans Memorial in the median on Broad Boulevard between Front Street and Second Street in Cuyahoga Falls. Sponsored by VFW Post 1062.

Doylestown - Noon, recognition program at Chippewa High School, 100 Valley View Road. Veterans are invited to meet in the multipurpose room for refreshments at noon. Lunch at 1 p.m. At 2 p.m., visitors and high school students will attend a program with musical presentations. The school band and choir will perform. Speaker is Nelson Berger, an Army veteran and 1944 graduate of the school. Call 330-658-2011 for reservations.

Fairlawn - 10:30 a.m., ceremony at Fort Island Primary School, 496 Trunko Road.

Fairlawn - 2:30 p.m., ceremony at Herberich Primary School, 2645 Smith Road..

Lake Township - 8:30 a.m., observance at the Lake High School gymnasium, 1025 Lake Center St. NW, Lake Township. Veterans will be served coffee and rolls in the school cafeteria from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. Parking is provided in the public library lot off Market Avenue North.

Lawrence Township - 10 a.m., ceremony in the gymnasium at Northwest High School's Puffenberger Hall, 8580 Erie Ave. N. For information, call Steve Jones at 330-854-2205.

Macedonia - 8 a.m., observance at Nordonia High School gymnasium, 8006 S. Bedford Road. All military veterans and active duty armed services members in the Nordonia Hills community are invited to participate and are asked to assemble by 7:45 a.m. in the small gym at the rear of the building. A reception will follow the program.

Norton - 8 a.m., pancake breakfast for veterans and their families in the Norton High School cafeteria, 4108 Cleveland-Massillon Road. At 9:30 a.m. in the gymnasium, there will be a program featuring the school's band and choir. For reservations, contact Rob Howerton at 330-825-7300, Ext. 532117

Richfield - 9 a.m., local veterans invited to breakfast, followed by an assembly at Revere High School, 3420 Everett Road. The school's symphonic choir will perform and there will be a ceremony. There will be a reception for guests after the assembly. For reservations, call 330-523-3202.

Tallmadge - 10:30 a.m., program in the Historic Church on Tallmadge Circle, followed by an 11 a.m. ceremony, including a rifle squad, at the nearby Veterans Memorial.

Wadsworth - 8 a.m., free breakfast for veterans at Wadsworth High School, 625 Broad St. Call 330-335-1400 for reservations and details.

Cleveland Area Events:

Cleveland - Pinning ceremony will be held in Cleveland at 1 p.m. to honor veterans who are residents at the Hospice of the Western Reserve Hospice House, 300 East 185th St.

Euclid - American Legion Post 343 and the Euclid Joint Veterans Council will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. in the Euclid City Hall Rotunda, 585 East 222nd St. American Legion bugler Joseph Mayer will play a medley of service songs. A free lunch will follow at Post 343, 20750 Arbor Ave.

Garfield Heights - Veterans Day service ceremonies in Garfield Heights begin at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Plaza, 5405 Turney Road, honoring veterans of all wars and conflicts. A reception follows in Room 118 of the Civic Center, 5407 Turney Road.

Highlights:

10 a.m. - 4 p.m. GW Veterans, a George Washington University student group, will host a Veterans Day ceremony and barbecue to remember the past and present men and women who have served in the United States military. The official ceremony will include a keynote address from Robert E. Wallace, assistant adjutant general and executive director of the VFW Washington Office, and conclude with a wreath laying. 1 p.m. The 15th anniversary of the Vietnam Womens Memorial will be the focal point of the annual Veterans Day Ceremony at The Wall. The ceremony is being co-hosted by the Memorial Fund and the National Park Service. The keynote speaker will be Diane Carlson Evans, founder and president of the Vietnam Womens Memorial Foundation. 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. The US Navy Memorial holds a Veterans Day wreath-laying ceremony. There will be a WWII-style radio show at 2:30 p.m. The US Navy Memorial, Naval Heritage Center and Burke Theatere, 701 Pennsylvania Ave. NW. Contact: Lisa Zusman, 703-417-2706.

2 p.m. The National Japanese American Memorial Foundation (NJAMF) and the Japanese American Veterans Association (JAVA) are co-sponsoring the annual Veterans' Day ceremony at the National Japanese American Memorial to Patriotism.
