The Chase presenter Bradley Walsh issued a scathing swipe at a game show rival today.

Fans of the popular ITV1 quiz show, which airs Monday to Friday and is widely watched by Brummies, were left open-mouthed.

Some shocked viewers took to social media to have their say after Bradley's cruel joke.

The presenter fronts the popular programme, which stars five Chasers.

Today, Anne 'The Governess' Hegerty featured, instead of Mark Labbett - otherwise known as The Beast, Shaun 'Dark Destroyer' Wallace, Jenny 'The Vixen' Ryan and Paul 'Sinnerman' Sinha.

But all eyes were on Bradley, with the former Coronation Street star shocking fans.

In the final round, contestant Sue was asked: "Who fought the ‘Battle of the Memoirs’ with Field Marshal Montgomery after the Second World War had finished?”

Unfortunately, she didn't know the answer, so Anne stepped up to put those watching out of their misery.

Anne said: "Well I knew it was 1958 because my grandfather edited Montgomery’s memoirs.

"1958 was the year Montgomery’s memoirs came out and the other book he edited was Dr Zhivago…"

Bradley was stunned - and asked: “Your grandad?”

And then he told those watching: "And that's why we do this show, Pointless hello have that, Tipping Point have that."

Labbett and Wallace have both been chasers since series 1, while Hegerty joined in series 2, Sinha in series 4 and Jenny Ryan in series 9.

A team of four contestants individually attempt to amass as much money as possible, which is later added to a prize fund if the contestant survives their individual chase.

The chaser must attempt to catch each contestant during their individual chase, eliminating that person from the game and preventing the money from being added to the collective prize fund.

Later, in the final round, contestants who survived their individual chases play collectively as a team against the chaser for an equal share of the prize fund.
