Taft runs way into Bridgewater State record book

Bridgewater State’s Bill Taft of Hanson set the BSC men’s indoor track record in the 1,000 on Saturday with a time of 2:34.49 as he finished ninth at the ECAC Division III Championships at Smith College.

Taft broke the previous record of 2:35.45, which was set in 2005.

The Bears’ 4x800 relay team of Taft, Ryan D'Arcangelo Mike Sukeforth of Middleboro and Stephen Wahome finished 11th with a time of 8:15.05.

For the BSC women, Colleen Davis of Mansfield, Sarah Lagasse, Carrie Robitaille and Kylie Almeida finished 15th in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:12.00.

The Bears’ 4x800 relay team of Jessica Eidinger, Carissa Penney, Brittany Robinson and sophomore Melissa Harris also finished 15th with a time of 10:11.21.

BASEBALL

Stonehill 4, St. Anselm 1:

Brenden Shepard went 2-for-4 with two RBI for Stonehill while lefthander Eric Haughn of Pembroke scattered seven hits with three strikeouts and an earned run over seven innings for the win. Dan Corrigan pitched two scoreless innings for his first save of the season.

Senior Ryan Healey also went 2-for-4 for the Skyhawks with two runs scored while teammate Thomas Marino finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and arun scored.

New Jersey City 5, Bridgewater State 2; Bridgewater State 4, New Jersey City 2: The Bridgewater State College baseball team opened the season with a split of a doubleheader versus New Jersey City University on Saturday.

SOFTBALL

Salve Regina 7, Bridgewater State 3; Bridgewater State 4, Medaille College: The Bears split a pair of games to open the 2010 season at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Fla.

WRESTLING

Division III Championships: Bridgewater State senior John Marsh finished in fifth place in the 149-pound weight class to earn All-American honors at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa..

Marsh is only the second All-American in Bridgewater State wrestling history
