With just three albums to his credit, Bruno Mars is already one of the biggest pop stars on the planet. He’s scored countless hits, sold millions of records and he’s collected more than his fair share of awards in what is actually a relatively short period of time as far as the music industry goes.
Now, it looks like he may be headed toward another major nomination at the upcoming 2022 Grammys, and he might win one of the most competitive fields yet again, making history if he should do so.
The 2021 Grammys may have wrapped just a few months ago, but believe it or not, the eligibility cutoff date for the next round of nominations is already more than halfway through. All songs and albums hoping to be up for a golden gramophone in 2022 need to be released between September 1, 2020 and September 30, 2021 (the Recording Academy recently extended the period by one month), so there’s only a few months left to go. It’s likely that many of the titles that will go on to earn nods have already come out, and thus prediction season is already upon us.
Mars has released just one single in 2021, and not only is he sure to submit it for competition at the 2022 Grammys, it’s bound to be nominated. Mars teamed up with friend and fellow musician Adnerson .Paak to form the new super duo Silk Sonic, and shortly after announcing their formation, they released “Leave The Door Open.” The tune was welcomed warmly by fans of the two stars and critics alike, and it has only gotten bigger since it first dropped almost two months ago.
“Leave The Door Open” debuted inside the top 10 on the Hot 100, eventually rising all the way to the peak spot. The ‘70s throwback tune has quickly become a huge win on radio, reaching a massive audience across the country every week. It’s barely dipped in popularity since arriving, and while it may soon begin descending down the charts, its impact will be remembered, and the future looks bright for the cut...at least when it comes to awards.
It’s hard to imagine that “Leave The Door Open” won’t end up with at least a few Grammy nominations at the next ceremony, and it could easily sneak into the Record of the Year category, which now features eight slots. In fact, it would seem very strange if it didn’t earn a spot in that field.
If (more like when) “Leave The Door Open” does earn a Record of the Year nomination, it will be Mars’ seventh time competing for that trophy. That’s one of the greatest accumulations of nods ever, which isn’t shocking, as most acts are lucky to even be considered just once. It will mark .Paak’s first time in that field.
Come 2022, if “Leave The Door Open” actually wins Record of the Year, Mars will score his third trophy, as he previously took home the honor for his own “24k Magic” and Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk,” which he was featured on. If he does hear his name called that night, Mars will become just the second artist to claim the category a trio of times, as Paul Simon has done so before.
It’s too early to suggest that “Leave The Door Open” is the presumptive winner, but Mars has reason to start prepping for what may be another golden evening at the Grammys.
