RICHFIELD SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Have you seen a herd of 75 rogue buffalo in Otsego County?

State police today asked the public to be on the lookout for buffalo.

If you do find them, state police warn not to approach the buffalo because they are wild animals and can be unpredictable.

The buffalo escaped from the Bison Island farm in the town of Sharon. The farm, which normally has about 130 buffalo, is owned by a couple, Brian Grubb and Susie Golembeski, according to the farm’s Facebook page.

State police said the owner of the buffalo is asking anyone who sees them to contact him so he can attempt to bring them back to his farm.

Troopers were dispatched Thursday to Honey Hill Road in Roseboom after they received a report that several buffalo were eating second cutting hay still growing in fields resulting in no forage that could be harvested. They were also eating first cutting round bales of hay, state police said in a news release.

The troopers learned that a buffalo broke a gate allowing about 75 buffalo to escape from the farm. Specifically, there are at least 30 adult buffalo, including three bulls and 45 calves. About half of the calves are bulls, police said.

Troopers worked with a state Department of Environmental Conservation officer and the owner of the buffalo last week to devise a plan in an attempt to corral the buffalo. However, it is believed they have already moved from the area.

People have reported seeing Buffalo on Mill Pond Road in town of Schohaire to Pleasant Brook in the town of Roseboom.

Troopers ask anyone who sees any of the buffalo to contact the farm (518) 588-1402 or State Police at Richfield Springs at (315) 858-1122.
