Coronavirus In West Islip: Latest Updates

WEST ISLIP, NY — The new coronavirus outbreak on Long Island and across the nation is having vast impacts in West Islip, including the closure of schools and many businesses.

The number of cases of the illness caused by the virus, known as COVID-19, continue to rise and additional measures and closures continue to be announced. On Sunday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo extended his order all for nonessential workers to stay home, known as NY PAUSE, until April 15. Nonessential businesses will also remain closed during that time.

As of Tuesday morning, there were 5,608 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Suffolk County, with 1,136 in the Town of Islip. Here's how West Islip and its neighboring communities fare:

SCHOOLS

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone closed all schools for two weeks on March 15. On Friday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that all schools across New York will remain closed until April 15.

BUSINESSES

West Islip restaurants and bars are offering options such as takeout, curbside pickup, drive-thru and delivery.

HOSPITALS

Good Samaritan Medical Hospital is "prepared and has implemented prevention and control protocols to appropriately isolate patients who enter our facilities to prevent the potential transmission of infection and protect you. All clinical personnel are educated on the latest CDC and New York State Department of Health coronavirus guidelines and recommendations," according to its website.

CANCELLATIONS/CLOSURES

The Diocese of Rockville Centre announced that all funerals, weddings and other services at Catholic churches across Long Island are canceled. Earlier in the month, the Diocese said all masses for a month — including all Holy Week and Easter services — would be canceled due to the coronavirus.

Town of Islip officials announced on Monday that town offices on 655 Main Street (Town Hall), 401 Main Street (Town Hall West) as well as the offices in 40 Nassau Avenue and 50 Irish Lane (Brookwood Hall), will be closed to the general public. Constituent services can be reached by calling 631-224-5380. Senior Centers closed until further notice, however, essential Senior Citizen services will continue, including at home meal delivery and transportation to doctors appointments. Seniors who use Senior Centers for meals may request home delivery by calling 631-224-5340.

Traffic Violations conferences scheduled for March 23 and April 6 have been canceled. The Town's Planning Board meeting scheduled for Thursday has been canceled. There will be no animal adoptions for 2 weeks, effective Monday. Donations will still be accepted. For Lost Dogs, call 631-224-5660.

WRAP Pail distribution will be halted for 2 weeks, effective Monday. All programs, classes, concerts and the exhibit at the Islip Art Museum are canceled until further notice.
