A paralysed stroke victim stuck in a “hellish” Cambodian hospital has flown home – thanks to you.

Charles McLaughlin’s desperate mum Esther begged the Government to lend her £115,000 for an emergency air ambulance but it refused three times.

But the family got Charles home at last thanks to re-mortgaging their home, crowdfunding and donations from Sunday Mirror readers.

Charles, 38, flew from Pnomh Penh to Manchester and is now at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, Lancs. Care and flights cost £79,000.

Doctors believe two blood clots on his brain left him with locked-in syndrome – he is conscious but paralysed and can only communicate by blinking.

His sister Jennifer Shaw said: “After weeks of to-ing and fro-ing Charles was pronounced fit to fly.

“We got him, a doctor, a nurse, his mum and his girlfriend Quynh and all of the necessary equipment on a commercial flight as a stretcher patient. We were on tenterhooks waiting for him to land.

“Our family is finally reunited. It’s so stressful and doctors say the next two weeks are critical.

“Charles has been incredibly strong so far and we hope that, in the excellent care of the NHS, he’ll make good progress.

“He wouldn’t be home without you all. Thank you for the amazing support.”

Charles went travelling last year after losing his job in London but stayed on and is said not to have extended his travel insurance. In August his landlord found him on the floor of his flat.
