Timelapse video shows beauty of monsoon storms in Arizona

PHOENIX — If you reside in Arizona, you most likely have been caught up in a monsoon or dust storm at some point.

It may be an inconvenience — dealing with the rain, wind and dust, especially on the road — but if you have the time to sit back and view the storms in their entirety, you might think differently.

Just ask Mike Olbinski, a photographer who spent a total of 35 days shooting monsoon storms this summer to put together an incredible timelapse video. He drove 13,000 miles and shot 112,000 frames to capture every rain drop and dust devil he came across.

He didn’t just stay in Arizona. He noted at the end that he also made stops in California and New Mexico. He drove as far west as Desert Center, California, as far east as Wilna, New Mexico and as far north as Tonalea, Arizona, near the state line with Utah.

One of the “bonuses” Olbinski experienced was his shots at the Grand Canyon, where the combination of the storm and the view of the Milky Way made for a captivating image.

The stormchaser made it a family affair as well and brought his kids along for a few different photoshoots.

We want to hear from you.
