National Weather Service issues wind advisory for Thanksgiving travel across Northeast Ohio

Winds expected Wednesday

Strong winds are expected Wednesday across Northern Ohio, according to the National Weather Service in Cleveland.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Hold on to your turkeys: the National Weather Service in Cleveland is warning of strong winds this week that could hamper Thanksgiving travel plans across northeast Ohio.

A wind advisory is in effect for Cuyahoga, Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties from 7 a.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday, according to NWS. The weather service also issued a wind advisory for several counties including Medina, Summit, Portage, Trumbull, Mahoning, Stark and Wayne, in effect from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 4 a.m. Thursday.

Expect winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph, NWS said. Use extra caution when driving and secure outdoor objects.

A high-wind warning is in effect for areas west of Interstate 71 including Lorain, Erie, Huron, Sandusky, Lucas, Wood, Ottawa, Hancock, Seneca, Wyandot, Crawford and Marion counties from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday.

The NWS forecast calls for 25 to 35 mph winds with gusts up to 60 mph. Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines, and power outages are expected, NWS said.

A gale warning is in effect for Lake Erie nearshore waters from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 7 a.m. Thursday, NWS said. Expects winds up to 40 knots and waves of 10 to 14 feet.

Rain is expected to start late Tuesday, with the highest chance of showers before 1 p.m. Wednesday, according to NWS.

Travel delays may result from limited visibility, slippery roads or gusts of wind, NWS said. Strong winds are more likely to impact large vehicles and air travel. Planes will need more time to take off and land, which could cause significant delays.
