West top 25 recap: Reagan knocks off #4 East Forsyth, Porter Ridge upsets #5 Ardrey Kell

Grimsley survived Southeast Guilford, Reagan and Porter Ridge upset top-5 opponents, Hickory Ridge and West Forsyth take care of business against fellow ranked teams.

#1 Chambers 64, West Mecklenburg 6: The Cougars posted a season-best point total in the precursor to next week’s big game on the road at #2 Hough.

Up next: Chambers will be on the road for a massive showdown with #2 Hough, and West Mecklenburg will be at West Charlotte.

#2 Hough 53, North Mecklenburg 14: The Huskies led 32-0 at halftime and never had the final outcome in doubt as they won big on the road.

Up next: Hough will hope to use home-field advantage to its benefit when hosting #1 Chambers, while North Mecklenburg is off before traveling to Mallard Creek on Oct. 1

#3 Grimsley 27, Southeast Guilford 17: The Whirlies trailed 17-12 midway through the third quarter but scored the game’s final 15 points to stay unbeaten. A five-yard touchdown run by Alonza Barnett put Grimsley ahead, and a 25-yard TD reception by Terrell Anderson made it a two-score game as Grimsley pulled away.

Up next: Grimsley heads to Northwest Guilford, and Southeast Guilford stays in-county but goes on the road to Northern Guilford.

Reagan 22, #4 East Forsyth 18: A quick turn of events near the end of the third quarter saw host Reagan turn a nine-point deficit into a 22-18 lead on a touchdown reception by Montrell Jones and a TD run by John Gullette. In a scoreless fourth quarter, it was Reagan that held strong defensively to secure the upset victory as East Forsyth turned the ball over on downs in the game’s final minute in the Raiders red zone.

Up next: East Forsyth is at Davie, while Reagan plays host to #9 Glenn.

Porter Ridge 25, #5 Ardrey Kell 14: Porter Ridge ended Ardrey Kell’s unbeaten start to the season by holding the Knights to a season-low 14 points and relying on its running game late. Up 16-14, Porte Ridge extended its lead to eight on a 20-yard touchdown run by Danny Kennedy, and kicker Braeden McCallister made it a two-score game late with a field goal.

Up next: Ardrey Kell is off next week and takes the field again at #14 Myers Park on Oct. 1, and Porter Ridge is also on a bye before traveling to #21 Marvin Ridge on Oct. 1.

#6 Charlotte Catholic 21, Providence 14: Providence responded with two consecutive touchdowns in the second half after going down three scores, but the Cougars held on thanks to its good start. John Deller recorded a 23-yard TD reception and Griffin Sovine scored on the ground from 32 yards out for Charlotte Catholic.

Up next: Charlotte Catholic will host Independence, and Providence is at #7 Butler.

#7 Butler 70, Garinger 0: The Bulldogs had no trouble at home against Garinger, as they pitched their second shutout of the season and scored more points than they did in the previous three games combined (63).

Up next: Butler is at home against Providence, and Garinger will also be at home against East Mecklenburg.

#8 Salisbury 49, Thomasville 21: Entering Friday, Salisbury hadn’t allowed a single point all season. That changed when Thomasville took an early 8-7 lead, but the Hornets remained dominant, as quarterback Mike Geter scored three consecutive rushing touchdownsfor Salisbury to take a 29-8 lead and blow the game open in the second quarter.

Up next: Salisbury hits the road to play West Davidson, and Thomasville will play host to North Rowan.


#9 Glenn 63, Parkland 0: Glenn secured a running clock by taking a 42-0 lead into halftime and cruised to a shutout win against Parkland.

Up next: Glenn will be away to Reagan, while Parkland hosts #13 West Forsyth.


#10 Weddington: The Warriors are off this week and are on the road at Olympic next week.

#11 Hickory Ridge 48, #25 A.L. Brown 14: A week ago, Hickory Ridge showed its talent and ability to compete in a narrow loss against Chambers. Friday, the Ragin’ Bulls showed that talent and ability can also lead to blowout wins against good competition. Six different Hickory Ridge players scored in the first half alone, as the Bulls led by 38 at halftime and had little trouble with A.L. Brown.

#12 South Mecklenburg 17, Catawba Ridge (S.C.) 3: South Mecklenburg defense entered Friday allowing only 9 points per game to opponents, and now that average is even lower after an impressive showing against Catawba Ridge. A touchdown reception by Tiques Mallette opened toe scoring for the Sabres, who never trailed.

Up next: South Mecklenburg isn’t scheduled to play again until Oct. 8 when it goes on the road to #5 Ardrey Kell.

#13 West Forsyth 36, #15 Mount Tabor 14: Nothing separated the two teams at the break, but a dominant second half led to a three-score win for the Titans. Chris Van Kleeck, Jevante Long, and Mack David each scored second-half rushing touchdowns for West Forsyth.

Up next: West Forsyth heads to Parkland, and Mount Tabor will host R.J. Reynolds.

#14 Myers Park 52, Berry 3: A week after a tough road loss at Buford (Ga.), Myers Park had no issues at all on the road at Berry. The 52 points scored and 3 points allowed were each season-bests for the Mustangs.

Up next: Myers Park welcomes HSOT East #2 Cardinal Gibbons, and Berry is on a bye before returning to action at Harding on Oct. 1.

#16 Reidsville: The Rams’ game against T.W. Andrews on Friday was postponed because both teams had Covid-19 issues. No makeup date has been announced.

Up next: Reidsville is scheduled to host North Forsyth next week.

#17 Maiden: The Blue Devils had their game against East Burke called off because of Covid-19 protocols within the East Bruke program. Maiden will be on the road against West Lincoln next week.

#18 Mallard Creek 29, West Charlotte 14: The Mavericks improved to 2-1 on the year, bouncing back from a 38-14 loss at Gaffney last week.

Up next: Mallard Creek has a trip to Hopewell, and West Charlotte hosts West Mecklenburg.

#19 Shelby 63, Cherryville 21: A 38-yard touchdown pass from Drew Hollifield to Marquis Adams in the third quarter built initiated a running clock for Shelby, which threw all over Cherryville in a dominant showing.

Up next: Shelby will be at Thomas Jefferson, while Cherryville hosts East Gaston.

#20 Statesville 14, North Lincoln 5: There wasn’t much scoring in this one, but Statesville jumped out to a 6-0 lead early on via a 56-yard touchdown reception by Steven Smith from Zamari Stevenson, and the Greyhounds relied on their defense from then on.

Up next: Statesville heads to East Lincoln, and North Lincoln takes on Hickory at home.

#21 Marvin Ridge 42, Alexander Central 8: Caleb Kelson did on the scoring in the first quarter for the Maricks, recording three rushing touchdowns in the game’s opening 10 minutes. Dominant from start to finish, Marvin Ridge’s defense has yet to allow an opponent to score in double digits.

Up next: Marvin Ridge is off next week before hosting Porter Ridge on Oct. 1, and Alexander Central is also on a bye with its next game coming at home on Oct. 1 against Ashe County.

#22 Dudley 57, High Point Central 0: The Panthers made good use of their bye week following a loss at Hillside and won easily at home against High Point Central.

Up next: Dudley will be at Atkins, and High Point Central will be at Eastern Guilford.


#23 Eastern Randolph: No game this week for the Wildcats, who welcome West Stanly next week.

#24 Charlotte Christian: The Knights are off this week and host Charlotte Latin next week.
