MN School Districts Moving Online Amid COVID-19 Case Spikes

MINNESOTA — Some Minnesota school districts are being forced to shift to remote learning in the first few weeks of 2022, as many deal with spikes in coronavirus cases among students and staff.

At least six districts in Minnesota moved to online instruction this week or plan to start remote learning Tuesday:

  • Osseo Area Schools

  • Rochester Public Schools

  • Shakopee Public Schools

  • Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools

  • Richfield Public Schools

  • Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191

Osseo Area Schools are set to learn virtually until at least Monday, Jan. 24, with some schools in the district having as much as a quarter of their staff members out sick.

That is making it impossible to "sustain ordinary, in-person operations for the short term," the district’s superintendent said in a message to families.

Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 moved classes online Thursday and Friday. The district is planning to return to in-person classes Tuesday.

Richfield school officials plan to bring students back Tuesday for in-person classes after moving to remote learning Thursday and Friday.

Students in Prior Lake-Savage schools also learned remotely Thursday and Friday, with in-person classes to resume Jan. 19.

Shakopee schools will be remote from Tuesday until Jan. 28, according to district officials.

Almost 700 schools were included Thursday on the Minnesota Department of Health’s list of facilities with recent coronavirus outbreaks.
