FOOTBALL fans in Bahrain are gearing up for a month of top-class feast beginning tonight at 10pm with the first match of the Euro 2016 between France and Romania.
This year’s edition sees the participation of five teams for the first time in the history of European Championship. And they are Wales, Northern Ireland, Albania, Slovakia and Iceland.
For a majority of fans in Bahrain, hosts France are the overwhelming favourites.
“France have a lot to play for. They have a star-studded team and I think the team will play to unite their country following the recent terror attacks,” said secretary general of Bahrain Hockey Association Jude D’Souza.
“They also have the massive advantage of playing at home. This could be an emotional tournament for them. France is going through a tough time as a nation and sports unites communities in a manner like no other,” added D’Souza, who is also a sports marketing professional.
For 24-year-old Mohanad El Hawary, France are the favourite because of their cumulative talent.
“They’ve got top performers like Pogba, Matuidi, and Lloris and this season saw the rise of a few other talented players like Payet, Kante and Coman. Add those to Greizmann who has once again had a fantastic season with Atletico playing in the European Champions League final and Martial who has steadily improved throughout the season for Manchester United and you’ve got a team brimming with talent. They also have a good manager in Deschamps. Home advantage is another factor. France, for me, is the team to beat,” said El Hawary.
Germany are another popular team among Bahrain football fans.
“I think Germany have a very good squad. They are up their among the best. Manuel Neuer has been remarkable and unstoppable and can save shots with his eyes closed. The team going into the Euro Championship is very similar to the one that took part in the previous World Cup. The best thing about German is their team spirit. I think they can achieve success again,” said Yousif Mahchi.
Others tip England to win the title in France.
“England have great players this time around. They are young and hungry to achieve something for their nation. However, their manager Roy Hodgson has included Wilshere and Milner, who have been injured, and left out vital players like Danny Drinkwater and Marc Albrighton who won the premier league title with Leicester,” said long-time England fan Seif Lewis.
