Georgia COVID-19 case count hits 48,207 Tuesday; Chatham reports new death for total of 26

Georgia’s confirmed-case count for COVID-19 rose to reach 48,207 by 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, while the statewide death toll reached 2,102, according to figures posted by the Georgia Department of Public Health.

As of 7 p.m. on Monday, June 1 — the last day when the DPH issued a COVID-19 statistical update in the evening; beginning on June 2, there will only be a single daily afternoon update — Georgia’s total case count was 47,899, while the statewide death toll was 2,089.

Chatham County’s total COVID-19 case count rose to 518 by 3 p.m. on Tuesday, a rise of only two cases since 7 p.m. Monday. However, one new death was reported in the county on June 2, bringing Chatham’s death toll to 26 and resulting in a rise in the death rate to 5%.

Bryan County’s confirmed-case count held steady since Monday evening at 75 by 3 p.m. Tuesday, with the Bryan death toll remaining at five.

Effingham’s case count rose by one to reach 75 at 3 p.m. Tuesday. The county's death total from the virus remains at one.

The DPH includes rates of known infection in each county, expressed as the number of cases per 100,000 residents to make comparison easier. Bryan County, with 75 cases and a population of about 40,000, continues to have the highest rate of the eight counties in the Coastal Health District at 191.6 per 100,000 residents.

Coastal Health District COVID-19 testing sites

The Coastal Health District will be setting up several mobile specimen collection centers around their eight-county jurisdiction.

COVID-19 testing through the Coastal Health District is free and most people will qualify for a test. It takes about five minutes and results are available in about seven to nine days. No appointment is needed for mobile-testing sites.

Call the Coastal Health District’s COVID-19 Testing Call Center at 1-912-230-9744 with questions. The center takes calls from 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday.
