McDonald’s Gives Back Day to benefit local charity

McDonald’s recently announced it will host McDonald’s Gives Back Day on Sept. 22. According to a news release, throughout the day, a portion of all purchases will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House of Amarillo, which helps keep families with sick children together and near the care and resources they need.

Residents can give back by visiting any participating McDonald’s in Amarillo, Canyon, Dumas, Dalhart and/or Borger.

“McDonald’s is blessed to be part of local communities,” Director of Marketing Brandon Clavel said. “To show our gratitude, we will be hosting McDonald’s Gives Back events that go to benefit and support local charities that operate and benefit the local community.”

McDonald’s Gives Back Day was created earlier this year as a way to help panhandle area charities that may be seeing a decline in donations due to COVID-19 and other factors, according to the release.

McDonald’s plans to host more Giving Days in the future, choosing a different regional charity to benefit each time.

League of Women Voters volunteers will provide opportunities to get registered to vote on Tuesday, Sept. 22, which is National Voter Registration Day across the country, according to a news release.

They also will be registering voters on Saturday. Those locations include the Burrowing Owl bookstores on the Square in Canyon and the Summit Shopping Center in Amarillo, both from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, and the “Fair on the Square” in Wolflin Village near the Coffee Memorial bloodmobile close to the Sleep Shop at 2620 Wolflin, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

League volunteer deputy registrars will conduct voter registration Tuesday at the following locations:

– East Branch Library at 2232 SE 27th; North Branch Library at 1504 NE 24th; and Northwest Branch Library, 6100 W. 9th, all outdoors, from noon to 3 p.m.

– Santa Fe Building, outside at the corner of 9th & Polk, from 10 am. to 1 p.m.;

– and outside the JB Kelley Student Center at West Texas A&M University on 2nd Avenue in Canyon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will continue to conduct voter registration at this location each Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. through September.

“We urge any citizen 18 or older who is not already registered to vote to come Saturday or Tuesday and get that done!” said Jami Cowart, LWV voter registration chair. “And those who were registered but have moved or changed their name need to get their registration updated as well.”

Voters must be registered by Oct. 5 to be eligible to vote in the General Election on Nov. 3, she added. The ballot includes those running for president of the United States, a U.S. senator from Texas, the 13th District Representative in Congress (the seat being vacated by Mac Thornberry), and a few local races. Amarillo residents will also vote on a bond issue to fund renovations and expansion of the Amarillo Civic Center; city charter revisions for changing the Amarillo City Council to staggered terms; and revision of the minimum number of meetings it must hold each year.

“We will have additional voter registration events leading up to Oct. 5,” she added, “so please ‘like’ the Amarillo League of Women Voters on Facebook for the most up-to-date information on events.
