DHARWAD Karnatak University, which boasts of being selected as the University of Potential Excellence and which is preparing to renew its accreditation with NAAC, lags as far as maintenance of roads on its campus.
Entering the university from Sringar Circle, after crossing the railway gate and the Dharwad Regional Science Centre (DRSC), one finds the ride into the campus bumpy thanks to the roads that are full of potholes. This bad stretch continues till the Diamond Jubilee Memorial.

From the main bus stop circle towards Golden Jubilee hall, the road is full of potholes, and one finds it difficult to negotiate the bumpy stretch. The road from Gandhi Bhavan to KIDNAR behind the botany and chemistry departments is no better.
Many senior officers and VIPs visit the university and commute between the administrative building and university guest house, but nobody has bothered to get the roads repaired.
“Only the double road in front of the administrative building from main building Vidya Soudha and bus stop circle is in good condition. The condition of the rest of the interior roads is much left to be desired,” said a post-graduation student who is an inmate of the university hostel.
“The interior roads are in bad shape for years and rains have exposed the shoddy works taken up by the authorities concerned. We had expected the interior roads to be repaired before March this year, but nothing happened. Now it will start raining and we must manage with bad roads for another six months,” said a student.

Stinking toilets
The maintenance of toilets in different buildings of the university is also poor. The lady lecturers who had come to the university from different colleges for evaluation of answer scripts complained that the toilets in Vishwa Chetana building did not have water and were not clean. “We had a tough time. Since there was no water in the toilets, we were asked to go to the neighbouring building and the condition there was no different,” said a lecturer.
“The top officials of the university get their official residences and chambers renovated frequently by spending huge money from the varsity. They should also look at the lack of maintenance of public utilities,” she said.
