“
Team work makes the dream
work” is something we’ve
been hearing quite often
around our office. We’ve
been managing just fine
without our fearless leader,
Editor-in-Chief Megan, but
only because we’ve been
working together to fill her
(very big!) shoes. Between
our advertising sales reps, editorial team, graphic
designers, and office staff, constant communication and
support from everyone made this issue come together.
Plus, it doesn’t hurt that we took a much-needed break for
“It's five
o'clock
somewhere.”
We packed a ton of content into this issue in hopes
to keep it up to par with what you’re used to with Megan
in the driver’s seat. And
if it’s not, don’t fret, as BABY JUNIPER
WHAT’S IS YOUR
WORST
SCHOOL
PICTURE?
“I may suffer from chronic baby-face
syndrome today, but back in highschool
I was in a league all to
myself. It’s rough trying to break
into adulthood when elementary
school teachers still mistake you
as part of their class.”
—Ray Burgess
“1981-1982, Sixth Grade. I decided
that I needed a new haircut before
this school photo was taken, so I
grabbed a pair of scissors and
chopped my bangs and whacked
off the long layer in front to be just
covering my ears, essentially giving
myself this snazzy little mullet. Yeah,
this is definitely one for the books.”
—Wendy Sipple
GENERAL DERMATOLOGY
“Everyone knows I never take a bad
photo…just kidding! Gotta love the
circa ’92 shaved hair part line and
all that Rave hairspray holding that
spike up!” —Gary Zsigo
“It was the beginning of middle
school, everyone’s favorite time,
right? I was so nervous and anxious
to start at a new school. The worst
part: this is the redo my mom made
me take!” —Emily Peter
“Yes, I know this picture looks like a
cute little girl in a dress. But I was
a complete tom-boy, so I hated
school picture days. I’d rather
wear jeans and play in the mud.”
Whiskey
Drinks
Since we’re almost on the cusp of summer
and fall, we thought it would be fitting to
bust out that whiskey you’ve been hiding
and turn it into something that’s cool
enough for warm summer nights yet ready
for that crisp autumn air. Check out some
whiskey cocktails we’ve found to help
make the seasonal transition easier. Best
Local nonprofit, A Touch of Understanding (ATOU), reached
10,929 students at 122 schools during their 2018-2019 school year
through workshops and activities. ATOU provides disability
awareness programs designed to educate students and promote
respect for all individuals.
Placer Community Foundation (PCF) awarded scholarships to
19 students from Auburn, Lincoln, Colfax, and Rocklin—many
who were pleasantly surprised with the award at their high school
graduation. Scholarships were issued in varying amounts and will
help students pursue a wide range of interests while continuing
their education.
The Rocklin High School choir recently took the stage with
Foreigner at Thunder Valley Casino Resort for a special
performance of “I Want to Know What Love Is.” The performance
is part of the band’s partnership with the Grammy Foundation
to support music education. Rocklin High School’s music program
received donations of $500 from both Foreigner and Thunder Valley.
Placer Community Foundation (PCF) welcomed four new
members to its Board of Directors: Elise Baker, Margaret
Fulton, Bonnie London and Raúl Martínez. PCF grows
local giving by connecting donors with causes, and each new
board member brings experience in and understanding of
strengthening the community through local giving. For more info,
visit placergives.org.
Hands4Hope in El Dorado Hills generously organized a bake
sale that raised over $300 for El Dorado County’s The Center for
Violent-Free Relationships, in addition to donating toiletries and
homemade blankets. What’s more, employees from Blue Shield
of California in El Dorado Hills created over 500 care bags – each
with an inspirational message—to be distributed by The Center.
Thanks to a grant from the El Dorado County Air Quality
Management District, the El Dorado County Transit
Authority reports that 10,121 passengers took advantage of their
free shuttle service to the 2019 El Dorado County Fair. This
marks the twenty-ninth consecutive year that they have provided an
El Dorado County fair shuttle.
Infusion Taproom in Lincoln held their first annual F* Cancer
Pouring for a Cause that included the release of Silver Moon
Brewing’s F* Cancer IPA. They raised $2,206 that went to the
American Cancer Society and Relay for Life (Placer County)
along with an additional $574.56 for Silver Moon Brewing’s F*
Cancer Program which they donate to cancer support networks.
The City of Folsom has a new finance director: Stacey
education and experience make her a perfect fit for the
position. Tamagni will be responsible for managing the city’s
annual budget, financial reporting, treasury, utility billing,
GET TO KNOW
David Attaway
Roseville resident David Attaway was
familiar with the fairgrounds as he lives
in the neighborhood and would walk
around the area frequently. In the long
periods between county fairs, the grounds
sat mostly vacant due to deteriorating
structures and facilities and was visited
only by a few community groups who had
been meeting there for decades. Yet,
Attaway, as CEO of Placer Valley Tourism
and @the Grounds, saw potential in the
site. “People didn’t know it was there,”
he recalls, adding, “I saw a way for it to
become a space that serves not only the
community, but also its business needs.”
Attaway wanted to create a space
for people in the community to come
together as well as bring tourists into the
“It’s important
to have a place
where we—
and future
generations—
and create and
area to enjoy the
place. As a child,
his family had
moved often due
to his father’s job
with the federal
government.
Later, his own
career in the
hospitality and
leisure industry
took him all over
the country. But
after moving to
Roseville over
eight years ago,
Attaway felt he’d
finally found his
niche and he refused to let the grounds fall
prey to housing developers.
These days, the former Placer County
Fairgrounds (now @the Grounds) is at
the end of a two-year renovation with
the construction of a 160,000-squarefoot
indoor multi-purpose facility on the
site well underway. For Attaway, an art
enthusiast, the most rewarding aspect has
been the creativity involved in imagining
what the space could become—and then
bringing that vision to life. “It’s important
to have a place where we—and future
generations—can connect and create and
brainstorm and do business,” he shares.
“It’s something you can’t reproduce via
computer or phone.” —Amber Foster
SWEETWATER TRAIL
BY EMILY PETER
ask the experts
Q: What are some things I
should keep in mind when
looking to get new glasses?
A: Every person’s prescription
is unique, and some frames will
be a better fit for their lenses
than others. By allowing us, the
opticians, to help in the fitting
process, you will find there are
specific details we look for. These
details include bridge fit, how the
temples fit your ears and head,
which frame will help make lenses
appear thinner, measuring the lens
to your specific eye placement in
frames, and advising you on when
it’s important to select lightweight
frames. Also, there are many
choices in lenses—from selftinting
lenses, lenses that protect
from blue light (e.g., computers,
tablets, and phones)—and different
materials. Combining all these
things, along with choosing the
frame that fits your style, is what
opticians strive to do!
Q: How do I know if my body
needs a detox cleanse and
how often should I do one?
A: Juice cleanses are great for a
multitude of reasons, but the best
way to put it is: it’s like pressing
the reset button on your body.
Cleanses have been known to help
with cravings, caffeine tolerances,
bloating, and a plethora of other
benefits. Your body is still getting
two to three pounds of fruits and
vegetables with every juice, but
the fact that it’s been broken down
already in the bottle allows your
body plenty of extra energy to
perform some deep cleaning on
your insides.
Salt Water
A Channel for Those in
Search of a Safe Harbor
by JANET SCHERR // photos by DANTE FONTANA
There are no definitive words to express the
sadness of losing a loved one. But “poignant,”
“courageous,” and “funny” are a few words that
do describe the collection of stories that people
have shared on Salt Water, a local website
designed for grief support and dialogue.
Whether it is for the loss of a parent, child,
spouse, sibling, friend or pet, Salt Water is an
outlet for any person who is experiencing grief
of any kind. The name was inspired by Isak Dinesen who said: “The
cure for anything is salt water: sweat, tears or the sea.” This adage
seemed fitting to the group’s founder, Margo Fowkes. “I created Salt
Water to provide a safe harbor for anyone grieving the death of
someone they didn’t think they could live without,” says Fowkes. “It
is open to everyone, regardless of what they believe, where they are
in the grief process or what type of loss they have suffered.”
After her only son, Jimmy, died of brain cancer in 2014, Fowkes
looked for resources and support to ease her pain. She wanted to
find a community that didn’t focus on providing an explanation
for her loss (“It was God’s will”) or attempt to discount her loss, or
anyone else’s (“It was just a dog”). “Loss is loss, grief is grief, and pain
is pain…we need to honor each other’s grief and pain, not judge it,”
Fowkes asserts.
Salt Water’s articles and resources focus on connection and
common ground to help people feel less isolated in their grief. It
also offers suggestions and ideas for friends and family members
26 stylemg.com | AUGUST 2019 | /stylemg /stylemediagroup /stylemediagroup /stylemags

who are desperate to help but don’t know how to. “I learned early on that there are no
magic words that will bring Jimmy back,” says Fowkes. Rather than criticize people
for saying or doing the “wrong” thing, Salt Water offers practical suggestions and
encouragement for those who want to help, along with gentle reminders of what a
griever might find hurtful despite a loved one’s best intentions.
Approximately 175 original articles and poems are currently on the website and
because the group is neither a nonprofit nor a for-profit, there are no donation requests
or ads. “[People] say they appreciate the ability to find what they need without being
asked for personal information or money,” says Fowkes.
The holidays and the first few weeks after the death of a loved one can be
particularly difficult. In September, Salt Water will share stories and advice on how to
survive the early days after a loss. During December, there will be daily tips on how to
survive the holidays without a beloved family member or friend.
Fowkes encourages readers who have lost someone dear to them to become part of
the Salt Water community. “It can be as simple as sharing a story or contributing a blog
post, poem, photo or drawing,” she says. “Sign up for our weekly newsletter, follow us on
social media, and connect with another griever.”
Spotlight on
Roseville
Mural
Project
by HEATHER L. NELSON
Photos courtesy of the City of Roseville.
Led by Blue Line Arts in collaboration with the
Downtown Roseville Partnership, the Roseville
Mural Project aims to help revitalize the city
aesthetically, culturally, and economically with its
first public art in over a decade. Commissioning five
downtown murals from local artists this past spring,
the organizations’ shared mission aims to include
community engagement events as well as free arts
programs. “I hope the project brings a sense of pride
and that the murals become a part of the story of
this town and continue instilling a sense of wonder
in people,” shares Brooke Abrames, Blue Line Arts’
co-director. “It’s about injecting small moments of
beauty into everyday life.” Read on as Style gets each
artist to dish about their masterpiece.
Ali Futrell
HLN: HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR
STYLE?
AF: My artwork is large-scale, bright, colorful, and when
AUGUST 2019 | stylemg.com 41

| arts & entertainment |
it comes to my murals, specifically, they always end up a
bit whimsical.
HLN: WHAT INSPIRED “ROSES ARE BLUE”?
AF: The new as well as historic elements of Roseville. I
was interested in giving them new life by transforming
them into colorful, contemporary illustrations.
Ellie Gainey
HLN: WHAT SIGNIFICANCE DOES “JUNCTION”
HOLD?
EG: [It’s] near and dear to my heart as I was born in
Sacramento and raised in Roseville. It has been inspiring
to see how Roseville has grown over the past two decades
and I wanted to highlight the facets that make it special—
including our wine trails, railroad history, and local flora
and fauna.
HLN: HOW ARE YOUR TALENTS HIGHLIGHTED?
EG: My unique style mixes visual realism with graphic
design. I’m interested in typography and clean lines, yet
admire organic shapes found in nature; and I have fun
blending these opposing aesthetics.
Rafael Blanco
HLN: WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR THEME FOR
“DOROTHEA LANGE”?
RB: Dorothea Lange became well known in the art
world for her [Depression era] photographs, yet never
became as famous as she should have. First, she was
a woman. Second, her subject matter—immigrants
and people in despair—wasn’t popular at all. I
combine studio techniques with street art and used
a monochromatic color scheme to impose a sense of
nostalgia—just like her black and white photography.
Madelyne Joan Templeton
HLN: HOW DID YOU DEPICT PAST, PRESENT,
AND FUTURE?
MJT: In “Native Plants and Patterns”, the rose pattern
vintage wallpaper represents Roseville’s history. The
young female gazing out represents the monumental
importance of present and future youth in the city all
the while reflecting and blending the past into the future
while creating a sense of home and comfort.
S.V. Williams & Molly Devlin
HLN: THIS BEING A COLLABORATION, HOW
DOES “MOTHER’S HARVEST” REPRESENT EACH
OF YOU?
SVW: The artwork reflects a blend of both of our styles.
Our mural depicts a native woman with silver and gold
hair, her body shaped from a trunk of a blue oak tree.
She’s made out of native plants from throughout this
region; the leaves forming her face and hands as she
gathers another native crop—blackberries.
Hours: Monday-Friday, 3-6 p.m.
become a regular, this casual hangout
satisfies all of the typical cheat day pub
cravings plus 22 beers on tap and 12 screens
Hours: Monday-Friday, 3-6 p.m.
and rolled in poblano sauce, and
finished with parmesan cheese and cilantro,
this savory dish is the perfect pick for midday
Since it’s a tap house, you should probably
Did you know?
Happy hour is banned in eight
US states: Alaska, Indiana,
Massachusetts, North Carolina,
Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Utah,
and Vermont.
The term “Happy Hour” dates
back to the early 1900s and
was a slang term used by the
US Navy to describe various
entertainment activities. It
wasn’t until Prohibition that
Americans began using the
term specifically for drinking.
Happy hour has been illegal in
Ireland since 2003.
Happy Hour Dos:
DRINK. Alcohol dehydrates,
so to avoid that hangover, sip
on water between drinks.
TALK. If you’re with coworkers
you can be tempted to
carry on where you left off at
work, but, instead, show them
who you are outside of work and
find out more about them, too.
EAT. Alcohol on an empty
stomach is a bad idea and
can also lead to a hangover.
That’s what the appetizers and
sharables are there for. So,
dig in!
Happy Hour
Don’ts:
DON’T BE GLUED TO
YOUR PHONE. Doing so is
impolite in any social situation.
DON’T OVERDO IT—with
the drinking, with talk about
your problems at work or at
home, or with overeating.
DON’T NOT GO. It’s a great
way to blow off some steam,
get to know your friends and
co-workers better, and try out
new restaurants and bars.
Sierra Vista Vineyards and Winery
Close your eyes and imagine being in the Côtes du Rhône or
Bordeaux regions of France. You're on rolling acres of ancient
rooted vineyards with topography, soils and altitudes that
grow some of the best grapes in the world. Keep them closed
and imagine having an array of your favorite wines served
to you by a professional staff member. When you visit Sierra
Vista Vineyards and Winery, your imagination comes to life.
You'll be surrounded by a panoramic view of the same rolling
acres you just imagined. You also enjoy a stunning view of the
Sierra Nevada's snow capped Pyramid Peak.
Sierra Vista has way more than the magnificent views. It
started in 1972 as they pioneered the way for most of today's
Sierra foothills wineries. The legacy of their premium grapes
and fine artisan wine making skills continue to make some of
your favorite award winning wines.
It only gets better from here. There are new young owners taking
the helm that impress even the most particular skeptics with
innovative, unique and exciting ideas to enhance the beautiful
property. The staff that has been assembled is one of the most
cohesive, unified teams of experienced professionals you'll find
from around the foothills. When you arrive at Sierra Vista, you will
be treated as family as they eagerly tell you about the upcoming
music events, wine pairings & the membership plans. "We are
incredibly grateful to be part of the Sierra Vista family!" The new
wines that they are producing are already getting the attention of
the guests with their elegant style, their
upcoming 3 tier sparkling wines and more.
Put this on your list to stop in frequently
and experience the fun, exciting and family
& friends atmosphere. Sierra Vista is a
dream come true.
7 Tips for
Optimal
Eye Health
by KOURTNEY JASON
As you’re reading this, let me give you a quick reminder: blink! Shawn Palmer, M.D., an eye
physician and surgeon in Folsom, says forgetting to blink is one of the most common mistakes
we’re making when it comes to taking care of our eyes. “You may notice your eyes feeling
dry after staring at a screen or reading for a long time,” he says. Other common concerns?
“Skipping eyelash hygiene, especially if you’re wearing mascara; not wearing your sunglasses,
even on cloudy days and in the winter; and thinking you don’t need safety glasses,” he states.
Keep reading for seven simple tips to maintain optimal eye health. You won’t want to turn a
blind eye to this advice.
GET YOUR EYES CHECKED EVERY YEAR
Dr. Jennifer Wademan, O.D., eye doctor and owner of Bidwell Optometry, says your check-ups
should be prioritized. “How important is
your vision? Most people would say it is
their most important sense, yet they go
years without eye exams, updating glasses
and contacts or just plain ignore symptoms
that could indicate eyesight problems.”
How often should you get checkups?
“Your eyes should have a routine
vision check once every year, unless
recommended otherwise by your
optometrist, or, if you notice changes in
your vision such as blurred vision, flashes
of light, floaters or black spots,” says Amber
Bingham, optician at Roseville Vision Center.
And it’s never too early to start taking care
of your vision. Optometrists can examine
children as young as six months old, unless
otherwise directed by your pediatrician.
KNOW THAT YOUR PHYSICAL HEALTH
IMPACTS YOUR EYE HEALTH
“Diseases such as diabetes, high blood
pressure, high cholesterol, and thyroid
problems directly affect your eyes,” says
Bingham. “If you aren’t managing these
diseases and being compliant by taking
medications and making lifestyle changes, it
can have irreversible consequences.”
BE DILIGENT WITH WEARING
SUNGLASSES
“Sunglasses are necessary to block harmful
UV rays that can lead to premature
cataracts. They protect the delicate skin
around our eyes from being burned, which
can lead to skin cancer. Your eyes also
need protection from the sun and can get
sunburnt as well,” states Bingham. When
purchasing sunglasses, Dr. Palmer suggests
to look for ones that block out 100 percent
of both UVA and UVB radiation.
EAT A HEALTHY DIET
Dark leafy greens, colorful vegetables, and fish oils aid in keeping
your eyes strong and help fight against certain diseases, including
macular degeneration, says Dr. Allisyn Feucht, O.D. at El Dorado
Hills Optometric Center. If you are suffering from dry eye, Dr.
Wademan suggests adding an omega-3 supplement to your diet.
“Diet is monumental,” she asserts.
BE WARY OF EYE DROPS
“Not all over-the-counter drops are good for your eyes,” Bingham
cautions. “Usually redness to the conjunctiva (or white part) of
Leafy greens photo Copyright 2014 Robyn
your eye is a sign there may be something
going on, such as dry eyes, allergies, or an
infection. Drops, like Visine, don’t correct
the problem—they mask it by ‘getting
the red out.’ Speak with your optometrist
about what drops will work best for you.”
STEP AWAY FROM THE SCREENS
“When we’re focusing on our phones and
screens for long periods of time, we tend
not to blink as often and our eyes dry
out,” Dr. Feucht says. “Screens can cause
eye strain and we need to
take breaks from the
long periods of time
we spend in front
of them.”
As for the
pesky blue light
emitted from
screens? It can lead
to eye discomfort
and make it harder to
fall asleep. “Blue-light-blocking filters
on screens or in glasses can be helpful
to protect the eyes and to view screens
more comfortably,” she adds.
Computer eye strain photo ©Antonioguillem
- stock.adobe.com.
MAINTAIN YOUR PRESCRIPTIONS
“Have your prescription glasses and
contact lenses checked every year,”
suggests Dr. Feucht. Typically, glasses
prescriptions expire two years after the
refraction, or prescription check, while
contact lens prescriptions expire in
one year. Since contact lenses come in
contact with the eye, they do come with
more risks than glasses. “Contact lenses
need to be cared for diligently and differ
depending on the length of wear-time. If
contact lenses are over-worn, the risk of
complications and eye infections goes
up,” she says. “It is important to follow
instructions with contact lenses and
if something does not feel right, get it
checked right away.”
Since we're in California where the weather allows us to
be outdoors most of the year, there is every reason to
not only swim, eat, and lounge outdoors but entertain al
fresco, too. While you could choose to dance or sing with
friends and family, there is something very magical about watching
movies outdoors. The big screen, snuggling under blankets when it
gets chilly, and being able to grab whatever you like to eat or drink
from the house or outdoor kitchen are just some of the reasons to
try this at home. A backyard film-screening party can involve the
whole neighborhood or be a causal romantic evening for two. Either
way, the thoughtful touches really make it a night to remember.
Check out these entertaining and design elements to shape your
outdoor theater and then get outfitted with all the gear you need to
make movie magic in your very own backyard.
String Italian lights overhead to provide just the right amount of
illumination while allowing viewers to take in the show effortlessly.
If you don’t have a screen to project upon, use a couple of ironed,
white, flat bedsheets strung between two poles to create one.
Alternatively, if you have a solid outdoor wall, consider projecting
upon it.
Create a refreshment center using vintage ice coolers or metal side
tables to support a bevy of beverage choices to take you through the
evening. A root beer or orange float station is never a bad idea—the
fizzy soda mixed with ice cream and sprinkles speaks to kids and
adults alike.
Create a walkway with candle-filled lanterns. The subtle flicker adds
to the ambience and helps guests see their way to and from the
house.
Make freshly popped popcorn (I love air-popped with butter and
salt!) with tasty additions like M&Ms and nuts. Guests can create
their own salty-sweet mix to indulge in during the movie.
Provide plush oversized throw pillows and blankets so everyone
Buckhorn
BBQ
BY LORN RANDALL // PHOTOS BY MENKA BELGAL
Gluttony: noun - habitual greed or excess in eating, or one who eats so much
delicious BBQ they are unable to move from the table. I unabashedly admit to
the latter (and the former for that matter) after
trying to eat my way through an appetizer,
"AT THIS POINT, I
salad, an assortment of sides and the “Family Feast” at
Buckhorn BBQ.
FEEL LIKE IF I HAVE
Located at the Palladio in Folsom this is a new venture
from the owners of the venerable Buckhorn Steakhouse
TO TELL YOU IT WAS
in Winters, a small-town jewel wildly popular for their GOOD, YOU HAVEN’T
proteins—especially their tri-tip (more on that later). Upon
entering the restaurant, it just feels like a fun place. To your BEEN PAYING
right is the “Fire Bar,” an open kitchen bar concept where
ATTENTION (AND
you can sit, eat, and watch the chefs prepare items from
the Fire Bar menu. I took a menu and sat at a table in the YES, IT WAS)."
back so I could peruse it slowly as the smell of smoked
meat began to work on my brain’s portion control setting
almost immediately.
I started with the Roadhouse Salad. I figured I’d better get something healthy in early
because by now that brain PC setting was in uncharted waters. The salad was a smart
choice not only for health reasons but also because it was just plain good—fresh greens,
cherry tomatoes, string beans, sweet waluts, blue cheese crumbles—perfect pre-pig out
fare. Next out were Bacon Wrapped Jalapeño Poppers (only on the Fire Bar menu)—lip
singeing, porky pillows of pleasure and pain with a sriracha aoli dipping sauce
And then the main event—the Family Feast. Three types of meat and three sides
plus cornbread muffins or rolls. I asked manager Nia about the tri-tip; “It’s aged 21 days,
wet marinated then charred, then dry rubbed with our secret Mossman seasoning
and smoked to a perfect medium rare. And the Pulled Pork is a 20-hour process,” she
continued, “eight hours in the marinade and 12 hours in the smoker.” Their ribs get a dry
rub and a three-hour smoke. Four different home-made sauces are served tableside with
an explanation (and a fun demonstration) by your server.
At this point, I feel like if I have to tell you it was good, you haven’t been paying
attention (and yes, it was). Stop by and have some, you’ll be glad you did.
Top to bottom: Bacon Wrapped Jalapeño
Fisher's Sandwich Shop // Raise your hand if a deli sandwich is one of your top choices for lunch. Or
dinner. Or a snack. There are always places to grab a sandwich, but when you find that perfect deli with outstanding customer
service, you know you’ve hit the sandwich jackpot. Fisher’s Sandwich Shop is a clear winner and one you need to try ASAP.
Art and Carmen Fisher, along with their kids, run three, successful local delis (Roseville, Rocklin, and Antelope). If you’re
lucky enough to have their son Alex help you, you’ll walk out with a smile on your face and a delicious sandwich in your
hand. They pride themselves on serving the finest quality meats and ingredients, including Certified Angus Beef and fresh,
homemade aioli, and horseradish. Bread is baked fresh daily, and soups and salads are also offered along with a kid’s menu.
Interestingly, some of their sandwiches are named after family members, like Lexy’s Cali Hot Pastrami (Pastrami,
bacon, cream cheese, avocado. Yum!), and Andrew’s BLT. One is even named after their dog, Maxx, which has Certified
Angus roast beef, bbq sauce, and cheddar cheese. You can also build your own sandwich, which is what I did. Dutch
crunch roll, turkey, and, of course, their amazing aioli, which Alex had made that morning. It was pure perfection. Next time
I’m getting the tri-tip sandwich which is a top seller. 7451 Foothills Boulevard, Suite 190, Roseville, 916-771-3800 —Julie Ryan
something to write home
How We Live
It’s rather strange to be a “famous”
parent and have your family
profiled on the cover of magazines.
I certainly don’t claim all the credit
for their successes, but all three have
turned out to be accomplished, caring
and capable people.
Susan is the CEO of YouTube, Janet is
a professor of pediatrics, and Anne is the
co-founder and CEO of 23andMe. They
rose to the top of ultra-competitive, maledominated
professions.
Parents constantly ask me for advice.
Through my decades of experience as a
mother, grandmother and educator, I’ve
identified several fundamental values that
help our kids achieve success.
One of these values is kindness, and
it’s one that some parents fail to teach
their kids.
TEACH YOUR KIDS TO CARE
I grew up believing it was my duty to
contribute and make our community
better. I still feel that way. If everyone just
sits around and talks, nothing gets done. I
was always a doer.
All of this influenced my daughters,
not because I lectured to them about the
importance of serving the community —
but because I truly cared.
I tried to show them through my
actions what they could achieve. I didn’t
realize at the time the profound impact
it has on children’s well-being, which
has been confirmed by a number of
interesting studies.
THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY
Teenagers who volunteer with younger
children experience both decreased
negative moods and cardiovascular
risk, according to a 2013 study. Another
study, from 2016, found that teenagers
who performed volunteer work were
significantly less likely to engage in illegal
behaviors and also had fewer convictions
and arrests between the ages of 24 and 34.
But how many of us think about this
when it comes to parenting? How many
of us take up causes and show our kids,
through our own behavior, how to fight
for our communities? How many children
feel empowered to take on the biggest
challenges of our time and find a way to
contribute?
It’s sad to say, but I’ve noticed more
and more kids completely focused on
themselves. Where they want to go to
college, vacations they want to take, things
they want to buy. Sometimes it feels like
we’re training a nation and a world of
narcissists, and I don’t think it’s a stretch
to say that helicopter parenting has played
a big role in this.
THE AMERICAN IDEA IS ALL WRONG
Kids are growing up feeling like they’re
the center of the universe. As young
adults, they’re not only lacking grit and
independence; they’re wholly unprepared
to take on causes that could make the
world a better place.
They tend to focus on money, because
they think it will make them happy and
fulfilled. It’s the American idea: Get rich,
then do nothing. Sit on a beach. Go out for
an expensive dinner. Go to Las Vegas. But
these kinds of pursuits turn people into
narcissists and thrill addicts.
There seems to be a number of them
here in Silicon Valley, people who worry
about themselves before anyone else.
They don’t prioritize the good of the
community, they don’t fight for social
causes and they aren’t pursuing a life of
meaning and purpose.
As a result, they often end up isolated
and depressed. I’ve met lots of unhappy
millionaires and even some unhappy
billionaires. A lot of them probably
started out as directionless kids.
PRIORITIZE SERVICE AND PURPOSE
Why do you think that here in the U.S.
we have an epidemic of opioid addiction,
depression and suicide? We don’t seem
to have the right information about how
to live well, how to take care of ourselves
and others.
We’re chasing money and possessions.
Not service, not purpose. If we have a
purpose at all, it’s to make ourselves
happy. But if there’s one thing I know, it’s
this: You’re happiest — as well as most
beneficial to society — when you’re doing
things to help others.
Your family may have similar stories
and a natural impulse to serve. You
might know exactly how I felt as a college
student convinced I could change the
world. But what if you don’t? What if you
were told to focus on personal success
and don’t know where to start?
Well, I have good news: It’s not that
hard. The main thing you need is the
right attitude — toward yourself and your
children. You can start small. Volunteer
for one hour in your community. Go to a
city council meeting. Research an issue
that affects your neighborhood. At the
very least, you can vote.
Everywhere there’s a problem to
be solved, someone or some group to
support and champion. It really is a way of
being in the world, and when it comes to
our kids, it pays to shape this perspective
as early as possible.
